REVENUE , READIES AND THE RETROBATES .

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

Black James found it easier to raise his hand than to speak ; up went his hand , and up went another and another , and then all the hands went up with a great roar. I explained to them how we would go about this business of raking the fire. I had two packets of forms in the car - one form would be signed by the chairman and secretary of the committee : a man's name would be written on it and the wording on it was an instruction to him to send in a year's annuity. When he got that form he would sign one in return, and the wording on the one he signed made it a pledge that he would stop paying anytime the committee ordered him to stop. In this way we would still be organised , and members of the committee would go through the townlands and explain these things. Everything I said was cheered : we were at war again!

It took us a good while to get the kitchen clear for a committee meeting , which endorsed the decision of the evening. There was a confused , gay, lively discussion , during which I explained that what was really important now was that there still should be a Donegal movement when other areas were coming more and more into the struggle. We had many urgent tasks. We must get more subscriptions into our defence fund. "Peadar , it was a dizzy night" , James Getins said, as I left his home , "I say, it was a dizzy night."

It was almost dawn when I drove Phil McCauley home ; we were just a little bit out of humour with one another and it was the only time there was any real sharpness between us. It arose over Black James Duirnin - Phil had word that James would be arrested again soon , and I think it likely that this news influenced him to the side of those who wanted peace. He thought it unworthy of us now to let the old warrior go to prison again, especially as we were permitting so many people to take shelter. He thought we should pay whatever amount was against the warrant that would send Black James to prison, at the point where the police car came for him. I could not bring myself to trifle with the old man , as he was the pulse of the movement, the very root of its courage. I would rather see his old body give out than lessen him in any way in his own eyes.....(MORE LATER).

THE ANATOMY OF AN AFTERNOON : THE STORY OF THE GIBRALTAR KILLINGS........

By Michael O'Higgins and John Waters. From 'Magill Magazine' , October 1988.

It could have embraced all this and more , but for the purposes of the inquest it embraced primarily the events of one afternoon - the four hours between the arrival of the three IRA members in Gibraltar and their being shot to death - and the thoughts which were in the minds of their killers as they fired the fatal shots. Of events prior to that day , Sunday March 6th , 1988 , the inquest was given only the sketchiest of accounts , likewise with the process by which the (British) soldiers came to think what they told us they thought : the intelligence gathering, the planning of the operation , the movements of the IRA active service unit before it arrived in Gibraltar.

The court heard evidence of at least one witness who might be able to shed light on some aspects of the truth but was prevented from so doing. Chief Inspector Correa of the Gibraltar police force gave evidence of taking a statement from a Spanish police officer in which details of the surveillance of the IRA members in Spain were revealed but the police officer had been denied permission to appear at the inquest by his superiors in Spain and the statement was ruled inadmissible by the coroner.

There was other information , too , about the nature of the surveillance operation in Spain which appeared intermittently in the newspapers throughout the inquest , indicating constant surveillance by both Spanish and British officers in Spain. Interesting though this might all have been , however, it did not become part of the truth which the jury of the inquest were invited to consider. The inquest heard sketchy pieces of information about events prior to Sunday March 6 , 1988 , and some details of related happenings after that date , such as the post mortems on the bodies and the finding of a car containing explosives in Spain on Tuesday 8th March 1988.....(MORE LATER).

REVENUE ROUNDING UP THE READIES FOR THE RETROBATES IN LEINSTER HOUSE.

To listen to her deliver a speech at the recent 'Macgill Summer School' in Donegal , you could be forgiven (!) for believing that she isn't at all arrogant although, in that regard, Josephine Feehily is her own worse enemy. She first associated herself with that outfit in 1993 as HR boss and worked her way 'up' to the position of 'Accountant-General' , and is now in command of finance in relation to tax and customs in this warped State. In 2011 , her 'skills' were truly recognised when the 'World Customs Organisation' appointed her its Chairperson following which , last year, she stole the show as the Chairperson of the OECD Forum for Tax Administration. She is one travelled lady , no doubt about it , and well used to getting her own way , and would appear to be the best person to contact if you want to see about getting a favour done for a friend - depending, that is, on how well connected you yourself are.

And, although lacking in 'connections' in that particular department myself , I'm almost tempted to send Josephine a copy of a letter I received recently from an acquaintance of hers and ask the good woman if she could possibly delete a digit (or two) from the figure mentioned , but maybe I shouldn't - it seems even those from her own social circles wouldn't do that themselves , so what chance would lil' old me have , unless and until I can improve my standing in this community ? Probably best to wait until I 'graduate' to those fine circles before I even think of asking her for a favour , as the little people seem to be easier to 'pick off' than the 'gentry' in this State. But perhaps I'm wrong , and there is , out there - somewhere ? - copies of letters from Michael Gladney and/or his State Revenue team which were sent to the Banksters , threatening to stop money at source from them ? Must go now , as I'm expecting the postman. And he always rings twice (the second time to apologise , I don't think...!).

"OUR OWN TURF FOR OUR OWN PEOPLE."

Cathal Brugha described Fr. Michael O'Flanagan as "The staunchest priest who ever lived in Ireland." This 'turbulent priest' died , aged 66, on this date (7th August) in 1942.

Born to Irish speakers and into a clan of Fenians in Roscommon in 1876 , Michael O'Flanagan was only 18 years young when he went to Maynooth College to study for the priesthood. He returned to his old alma mater , Summerhill College in Sligo and, at 24 years of age (in 1900), he was appointed 'Professor of Irish' in the college , from where he continued his involvement in Conradh na Gaeilge , through which he befriended Pádraig Mac Piarais and Douglas Hyde. His church at first considered him to be a valuable asset and repeatedly sent him abroad on assignments , but less so over the years as he had a social conscience which took precedence over his church's need for him to be a 'team player' and, indeed, he embarrassed his church hierarchy when , at 37 years of age, he fully supported the Sligo dockers in their trade dispute in 1913 (even though he was working in Rome at the time , which is where he was based between 1912 and 1914) as, then as now, his religious 'betters' had more in common with the owners and bosses rather than the poorer workers. In 1914 he was allocated to the parish of Ahamlish (North Sligo) before moving to Cliffoney , in that same county, and quickly became a true friend to the small farming community he now lived and worked with , and assisted them in their battle with the 'Congested Districts Board' who were trying to dictate the manner in which turf bogs could be used by the locals , an occasion that became known as the "Cloonerco Bog Fight" . During that 'turf war' , Fr. O'Flanagan helped to organise the funeral of O'Donovan Rossa (who died on the 29th June 1915) and he spoke in Dublin City Hall when Rossa was lying in state there , which seemed to be 'the hair which broke the camel's back' , as far as his Bishop (Coyne) was concerned - in October 1915 , the church hierarchy attempted to transfer him to a new parish.

However , his friends and supporters in Cliffoney objected and physically prevented the new parish priest from taking up his priestly duties , a situation which lasted until Christmas Day. Eventually , Fr. O'Flanagan was moved to Crossna, near Boyle, in County Roscommon, from where he continued to spread his own 'gospel' and that of Irish republicanism - he was vocally in favour of land reform and was strongly against Ireland taking any part in 'the First World War' , 'forced' (by Westminster) or not. He worked in the background for Irish republicans during the 1916 Rising and became more politically involved in the years following same and , in October 1917, he was elected the vice-president of the then Sinn Féin organisation. In May 1918 , he condemned the English and German 'Establishments' for their encouragement to young men to join what they called "the war effort" : "Those royal cousins who rule England and Germany will come together and clink their champagne glasses over the graves of millions of the flower of the manhood of Germany and England..." , and, no sooner had he delivered those words to an appreciative audience when Bishop Coyne banned him from saying Mass in public or administering the sacraments and it would be 1938 before those duties were restored to him. He played an active part in Sinn Féin's political victories that same year and was given the honour of opening the public session of the First Dáil Éireann in 1919 and was practically employed full-time in the 'Republican Courts' and in the development of the Dáil's land policy. He stayed true to his political principles in 1921 and opposed the 'Treaty of Surrender' , being barred from America and Australia for doing so.

He was elected president of Sinn Féin in 1933 , a position which he held until 1935 but he was expelled from the organisation the following year because he breached the abstentionist policy . He supported the Spanish Republic in its fight against Franco fascism from 1936 to 1939, which again put him at odds with his religious hierarchy , and undertook a number of speaking tours abroad in support of that fight. Father Michael O' Flanagan , 66 years of age, died in Dublin on 7th August 1942 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery on 10th August. Fittingly , his graveside oration was delivered by John Joseph O'Kelly ('Sceilg') , an action that that 'turbulent priest' would have appreciated.

STATE TRANSPORT MINISTER : 'BUS STRIKE ? NOTHING TO DO WITH ME....' !

Good to see action like this , even though it did inconvenience me and my kids , all of whom had different places to go , at different times : normally , I would just drive them and their friends to the bus stop and spend the rest of the day worrying about them (under strict orders not to phone or text them to inquire if they're okay !) but , like all Irish Mammies , that's my 'job'!

The bus drivers were about to suffer cuts in earnings (with €12million in total to be cut from the operational costs of the company) and changed working hours , both of which they objected to , but their employer insisted the new imposed practices were going to be implemented , so the workers withdrew their labour. And , to the shame of the trade union leadership , it missed the opportunity that the situation offered to 'flex its muscle' and bring other workers out in support of the drivers because , in my opinion , that is what's needed : an all-out State-wide strike , to show both management and politicians that we pay their wages , and not the other way around.

Anyway : speaking about 'jobs' , 'No Cent' Leo (who is a medical doctor by profession , by the way - 'pick up your crutches and walk....!') Varadkar , the State 'Transport Minister' , has stated that the dispute is 'nothing to do with me' but , at the same time , appeared to offer support to the management by saying that he understands that they have 'a responsibility to balance their books' but , to be fair to the man , he wasn't always concerned about 'balancing the books' , and will fight your corner if he deems you to be worthy and if he can do so using taxpayers money. However ; there you have it - a 'transport minister' who is 'neutral' in regards to a transport issue which should fall within his remit but who is 'more neutral' towards one side than the other. I'm actually less puzzled over the 'no contact , Ma'-policy of my daughters than I am over Leo's position , but he can continue not being involved , for now, anyway, as the strike - which began on Sunday morning (4th August) at 12.01am - was suspended at 12.01am this morning (Wednesday 7th) , pending discussions between both parties. If they can keep Leo out of it, they might just about sort something out....

'WORKING FROM HOME ? WHY ? I DON'T EVEN DO THAT IN THE OFFICE.....'

Following on from our piece (see 'Cash Cow Dying A Loud Death' , here) on the very expensive but politically useless State Senate , it now transpires that Mr Brendan Howlin , a Labour Party Minister (for 'Public Expenditure and Reform' , believe it or not!) in the present Dublin administration which , by the way, is supposedly campaigning for the abolition of the Free State Senate (a vote on same will, it seems, be held on Friday 4th October next) had voiced his opinion that the members of that institution should be allowed to 'work' from home (see our exclusive pic ,left...) and , for doing so , should be paid even more (see number 7 at that link) than they are at present!

I wonder would Mr. Howlin's concern for his political cousins in the State Senate have anything to do with the fact that he knows he and his lot in the State Labour Party will be 'Greened'
(ie wiped-out) in the next State election and he's attempting to secure his own political future , as a 'State Senator' (albeit one 'working' from home) and may therefore be about to offer a compromise re the State Senate abolish-or-not vote - that its plush building , offices and physical infrastructure only be done away with , as a 'cost saving measure' , but the positions themselves remain in place , on a digital platform. Mr Howlin and his colleagues have priced the overall cost of maintaining the State Senate as it is now at €20 million a year , comprised of €8.8 million in direct costs (wages, expenses and staff for the premises) , €9.3 million in indirect costs (computer systems and maintenance of same, mobile phones , office printers and ink cartridges [should have got them cheaper - see 'Pat and Aengus' , here !] and other stationery requirements , building security , cleaning staff , translation services and the cost of broadcasting and distributing the 'deliberations' of the Chosen Few that inhabit that institution) and €2 million on pensions for those that have retired from that retirement home.

If Brendan Howlin could spin a con-job like that , he would be giving himself a fighting chance to continue his 'career' as a ('work-from-home') paid politician , which beats having to work for a living.

JUDGING A SOCIETY.....

....WHEN IT'S THE POLITICAL SYSTEM THAT IS AT FAULT.

THIS is truly heartbreaking , and more so when you realise that the poor child's family are not only trying to do what they can while their son is still with them but have prepared themselves to carry on the fight afterwards, too. But it's a perfect yardstick for the type of society we have 'evolved' into : unless you have money , it genuinely is 'no country for the old' (or the young ,the sick or the unemployed) but , in a perverse way , it explains why our political system is so corrupt - the politicians and their ilk in the business community are determined that their health and welfare and , in most cases, that of their family, will be secured at whatever cost to anyone else. Regardless of whether the cuts are implemented in Dublin Bus or the cost of the State Senate is reduced (see above piece) the situation on the ground will not change for the 'ordinary joe' as there is no 'trickle down' policy for us : any money not spent on public transport or on a retirement home for the political class will be diverted to further the comforts of those administering the corrupt political system in this State. And , no matter whether its Fianna Fail , Fine Gael , Labour or Provisional Sinn Féin or whoever it is that's administering that system, that's the way it will remain. It's a new system that's needed , not different faces to administer the current system.

LEICESTER AND LEEDS ARE UNITED IN THE CITY , COVENTRY AND BRISTOL SHOULD BE AS ONE , BUT AREN'T......

....AND MANCHESTER AND WIGAN ARE NOT UNITED OVER WHICH OF THEM IS THE MOST ATHLETIC !

Or 'Whatever'! This coming Sunday (11th August 2013) , the CABHAIR organisation will hold a 650-ticket raffle in a hotel on the Dublin/Kildare border and, as usual with republican events of this nature, all tickets have been sold , except for the fifty that the organisers have held back for sale on the day , in the venue. There are a number of sporting fixtures that will take place that same day (the best known of which , I'm told (!) , are the games to be held between Man Utd - Wigan and Leeds and Leicester ?) and matches like those are important to us as they pull an audience into the hotel from which we benefit regarding our ticket sales. I'll be there , as always , with the usual raffle crew and , as usual , I'll post the results on this blog as soon as I can after the event , as I know we have a good few readers who purchase tickets from one or other of our sellers but who are unable to attend the raffle and , if you're one of the eight lucky winners , mine's a pint of cider. And even if you're not a prize winner , it's still thirsty work..... ;-) !

STATE REVENUE ISSUE 50,000 THREATENING LETTERS RE 'PROPERTY TAX' .

"I HEREBY FORMALLY GIVE NOTICE......"

The 'Property Tax' load will only increase , year after year but , even if it were to stay the same , it's still an unjust tax , and one I won't be paying.

As expected , I have received a letter from the State Revenue , signed by a Mr. Michael Gladney , in connection with money that he and his outfit claim I owe them as payment for living in my own house.

In his letter , Michael states " I hereby formally give notice that I will issue an instruction to... (my employer is named here) ....to deduct €112.00 in equal instalments from their payments to you and instruct them to remit the amount to the Revenue Commissioners starting as soon as is practicable after the receipt of the instruction and concluding in December 2013....(and) I must also advise that the estimated amount is not a full and final settlement of your LPT liability...", although, of course, I don't see myself as being 'liable' to any State institution for living in a house which I myself paid for - and it took more than twenty hard years for me to do that , with no State aid and none requested.

The fact that 50,000 letters have been dispatched by the State Revenue could be misinterpreted by some to mean that there are 'only' that amount of us that haven't paid this tax , but that is not the case : there are at least tens upon tens of thousands of us that haven't paid but only 50,000 letters have been posted by the State Revenue , to date. It seems that there is between 150,000 and 300,000 households which have not paid , or maybe more , depending on your source but , as stated before, I am not dependent on numbers to 'back me up' in regards to opposition to this tax , as I am not relying on the courage of somebody else's 'conviction'. Anyway - within hours of receiving the letter from the State Revenue , I wrote one of my own : to my employer , instructing them that no money is to be deducted from my wages in connection with non work-related issues unless I give permission in writing for same.

I fully realise that I am a 'David' taking on a 'Goliath' but what I am not is someone who will give in easily - without a fight - to that which I deem to be an injustice. So 'bring it on' , Mr. Gladney - let's see what you've got , because I'm prepared to take this as far as I can.....

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

FREE STATE 'COUNCIL OF STATE' SHOULD GO THE WAY OF THE FS SENATE.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

You ask me what I think you should do : I told them I should like them to stay out and hold their position at the head of this land war, but I would have to lessen their risks. I had an idea how to do that and I should like to put it to James Duirnin - would they all listen ?

Black James got to his feet and men near me made way for him ; "James" , I said , " when you're going to bed at night you don't put out the fire , you rake it. You turn the day's ashes over on live coals to slow down their burning and in the morning you pick out the live coals and you kindle a new fire from them. If I had my way now, I would not put out this fire. I would rake it." We would have to make ashes of part of the movement by asking a lot of neighbours to make peace.

I could not be sure whether one year's rent would set aside the risk of seizure for arrears, when everybody didn't do it, and there was no report that it was done against my advice, but if we were driven to it we would use our defence fund to help pay arrears to get the people with most to lose and least fitted for jail out of danger. That would give us the ashes and the safe byres and safe fields but if we were only going to rake this fire we would need live coals too - people who would not settle. And we would pick them : farms hardest to get at , with least stock, men who have known jail and do not fear it , men willing to give it a trial. It would be easy to make the ashes, but had we the live coals ? (MORE LATER).

THE ANATOMY OF AN AFTERNOON : THE STORY OF THE GIBRALTAR KILLINGS.

By Michael O'Higgins and John Waters. From 'Magill Magazine' , October 1988.

What we got , after nineteen days comprising over seventy witnesses and an estimated three-quarters of a million spoken words, was a controlled explosion of the truth. This is perhaps inevitable in any legal procedure, where there is a jury to be swayed and two opposing sides each with nothing to gain and a lot to lose from exposing that jury to certain aspects of that truth.

This, too , was exacerbated on this occasion by the fact that one of those sides comprised the Crown of England, speaking loftily of its need to protect "national security" and "the public interest" , phrases which, in the context of the Gibraltar killings, often seemed like they could be code for almost anything.

The truth is a many-faceted concept - rarely has that truism been so aptly illustrated as at this inquest in Gibraltar. The truth , for instance , could have embraced the several centuries of history which brought Mairead Farrell , Daniel McCann and Sean Savage to Gibraltar on whatever mission they were on the weekend they were killed. It could have embraced a whole sequence of events, actions and reactions, strategies , plans , policies , conspiracies - fill in your own colouring - leading inevitably and inexorably to those three bodies lying dead in the Gibraltar sun.....(MORE LATER).

DUBLIN GPO PICKET , SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST 2013....

....on Saturday 3rd August 2013 , RSF will hold a picket at the GPO in Dublin in support of Irish republican POW's , beginning at 12.30pm. All genuine republicans welcome!

FREE STATE 'COUNCIL OF STATE' : LET'S HAVE A REFERENDUM ON IT , TOO .

The Free State 'Council of State' , as presently constituted and, indeed , if constituted at all , is just another expensive 'talking shop' which offers nothing of substance to the 'ordinary joe' but helps to secure entry into the State 'Establishment' for its members and its supporters and , as with its political 'cousin' , the Free State Senate, should be abolished - see 'Cash Cow Dying A Loud Death' , here.

At the moment there are twenty-four political and/or politically connected/motivated individuals on this 'Council' and the fact on its own that twenty-two of them have no objection to sharing the same air as these two fellow-members speaks volumes , never mind the fact that the whole lot of them are trying to push their 'services' on an already overcrowded 'marketplace' : their 'boss' , Michael Higgins, has at least two (female) 'Councillors/Advisers' , both full-time staff members ('Special Advisor' and 'Communication's Director') , one of whom is paid €2156 a week whilst the other one has to rough it on a mere €1582 a week which , incidentally, is more money than they should have been paid for doing the 'job'. People of that ilk are responsible for pulling the plug , financially and morally, on this State whilst at the same time hanging-on for all their worth to the greasy chain, to ensure that they don't disappear down the same drain hole as the rest of us. That 'Council' and, indeed, the position of 'State President' , should be abolished and the assorted hangers-on made work for a living.

CLASS COVER(age...)

'Private Eye' magazine celebrates (!) the 'royal' birth!

Lol! What a breath of fresh air the above magazine cover is , compared to the unreal coverage afforded the incident by other print media outlets. And that same event received wall-to-wall coverage here in Ireland , as well as in England and elsewhere, to the extent that I severely limited my TV viewing , radio listening and newspaper reading on the day before the woman had a baby , and that day itself , and the following day. No doubt the shops , street stalls and other such hawkers of cheap trash made a nice amount of extra cash from the mugs , jugs and hugs they traded but that will soon pale into insignificance when the cost of keeping another silver spoon in another 'royal' mouth is taken into account. The Brits do love their pomp and ceremony and sure what harm , as it keeps their minds busy and draws them away from reality. There's nowt so queer as folk , to be sure.....

31ST JULY 1975 : MIAMI SHOWBAND MASSACRE.

The Miami Showband - deliberatey targetted by British forces as a warning to the 'taigs'.

On this date (31st July) 38 years ago the true nature of Britain's interference in Ireland once again made world headlines : a well-known musical act was targeted and attacked by armed elements associated with Westminster , in order that a message should again be delivered to all those opposed to British injustice : 'keep your head below the parapet or else...'.

As the British themselves said at the time (almost getting it right) "....unfortunately there were certain elements in the police (RUC) who were very close to the UVF, and who were prepared to hand over information, for example, to Mr Paisley. The (British) Army’s judgement was that the UDR was heavily infiltrated by extremist Protestants, and that in a crisis situation they could not be relied on to be loyal...." (from here) : however , according to their 'reading' of the 'script' which had been handed to them by Westminster, the perpetrators were being "loyal" in that they were doing that which their 'Empire' had always done - take by force and maintain by force.

That 'take and maintain by force' attitude is still rampant in the mindsets of those who remain "loyal" to British military might but, for now , they have 'toned down' the method by which they practice same - instead of blatantly executing those they perceive to be 'the enemy' , they now intern them without 'reason' and can do so relatively assured that a compliant media will , in the main, ignore such outrageous actions as it is deemed to be not as 'hot' as a showband massacre and therefore less deserving of coverage. For what it's worth , this blog will continue to highlight such injustices and will continue to be 'disloyal'.

31ST JULY 1838 : 'FORCED EVICTION ACT' MADE LAW IN IRELAND BY WESTMINSTER.

The 'Poor Law Act/Act for the More Effectual Relief of the Destitute Poor in Ireland' , which encouraged wealthy 'landlords' to evict their tenants rather than assist them financially.

On this date (31st July) 175 years ago, the Westminster Government introduced a new tax in Ireland ostensibly to 'aid the poor' , provided they entered one of the new workhouses, which soon became overcrowded. Emigration was encouraged by Westminster and by their agents on the ground - the 'landlords' , as they were subject to the new tax - and, so desperate were the Irish to survive any way they could, the emigration 'option' was soon over-subscribed and a new 'rule' was introduced by Westminster : only those who had been 'resident' in a Workhouse for a two-year period would 'qualify' for (forced) emigration. Such was the number of those seeking any sustenance they could get (for instance , from 1849 right up to 1906 , about 45,000 Irish people had to leave their native land) the British decided that 'relief' would also be offered to those whom the Workhouses couldn't admit (due to sheer numbers alone) and financial and other offers were made by the British to those in the Workhouses (and outside of it) to encourage them to leave Ireland and, in one short period - between 1883 and 1891 - about 25,000 people fled their homeland.

The new taxes on the 'landlords' (which funded the Workhouses and other such 'relief' schemes) were based on a 'per head' count, meaning that the more tenants a 'landlord' had, the more s/he paid in tax, the reality of which soon hit home for the 'gentry' : less tenants equals less tax , so 'offers' (worth the bare price of a ticket on the coffin ship)were made and reluctantly accepted as to do so worked out cheaper in the long run for the 'landlord'. The issue was reported on by, amongst others, 'The Illustrated London News' which, in January 1850 , recorded the following - 'Do not suppose that, in questioning the principle of the law, I advocate the misrule of the landowners, who demand the repeal of this law, and the restoration of the Corn-Law. I have seen enough to be thoroughly convinced, speaking of them as a body, and admitting many exceptions, that they are extremely selfish, ignorant, negligent, profligate, and reckless. To the serf-like people they have always been more oppressors than protectors; and have thought of them only as sponges out of which they were to squeeze the utmost possible amount of rent, to squander on their own pleasures.... for the landlords, as a body, I have no respect, and cannot feel any pity.... we may condemn the manner in which the land was appropriated - we may trace to that many present evils....it is perfectly clear that the very smallest occupiers could pay no rates, and the landowners, having been made responsible for their rates, eviction was further encouraged by a desire to get rid of non-ratepaying tenants, and to acquire tenants, who, occupying larger holdings, would pay rates. The law, therefore, said to be for the protection of the people, was really a scourge to them.....' (More here.)

And, indeed , 'the manner in which the land was appropriated' should be condemned, as should the manner in which six of our counties are still being 'appropriated' to this day , by the same political and military entity. Or will it take another 175 years before some among us see through the lies from Westminster ?

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

PAT AND ROBERT : MUSICAL (AND RESTAURANT) CHAIRS AND BAR STOOLS AND A 'LORD MAYOR' OR THE 'VICAR OF BRAY' ?

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

I had in mind to challenge the committee on the instructions they sent me at some point in that evening's procedure, if I could make the opportunity, and this was the best form in which opportunity could present itself. I said I had not being asked what I thought was best to do but there was no need to ask me , for it was agreed among us that if ever the committee thought this struggle was beyond us, I would go to Hogan and try to make peace.

The committee asked me to do that and I tried , but failed. You face two dangers , I told them, the seizure of cattle and imprisonment. None of you thought there was any danger in the Land Commission's threat to sell your holdings, for no neighbour would buy a farm that the Land Commission put up for sale and no stranger would be let live in one. So there were only the danger of seizure and the danger of jail , and we were in a better position to hold our own against seizures than ever before.

But jail was different : I could say that I do not think the Government would dare use that weapon much , but much or little jail scared people. Men who risked their lives freely outside will give any pledge asked of them to get out of jail. I hated to think of jail for any of them.(MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916 -

- REVISIONISM EXPOSED.....

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

This they hold , but they have no right to the mantle of inheritors of 1916. Republicans continue to claim that mantle and look to an Ireland free from foreign domination and respectful of the civil and religious liberties of all its citizens.

Charles Haughey , during his Presidential Address to the recent Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis , quoted that section of the 1916 Proclamation which promises to 'cherish all the children of the nation equally'. Rather than pay lip-service to such aspirations , republicans aim to make them reality.

PAT CANNON COMMEMORATION , DUBLIN : SATURDAY 27TH JULY 2013.

Pat Cannon (left),Dublin, and Peter McElchar ,Donegal.

In 1955 , the year in which Pat Cannon was born , splits were occurring in the IRA, as several small groups, impatient for action, launched their own attacks in the Occupied Six Counties. One such activist, Brendan O'Boyle, blew himself up with his own bomb in the summer of that year. Another, Liam Kelly, founded a breakaway group 'Saor Uladh' ('Free Ulster') and in November 1955, attacked a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) barracks at Roslea in County Fermanagh. One RUC man was badly injured and a Republican fighter was killed in the incident. In August of the following year, Kelly and another ex-IRA , Joe Christle, burned down some customs posts on the border.

In the UK general election of 1955, Sinn Féin candidates were elected MPs for the Mid-Ulster and Fermanagh and South Tyrone constituencies in the Occupied Six Counties, with a total of 152,310 votes. The following is the Election Manifesto that the then Sinn Féin organisation put to the people :

Sinn Féin election manifesto, Westminster Elections - 1955.

The following document was published by Sinn Féin in 1955.

SINN FÉIN ELECTION MANIFESTO WESTMINSTER ELECTIONS, 1955.

In the Election of 1918 the Irish People, by an overwhelming majority repudiated the claims of England and her parliament to rule them and they established the Irish Republic which was proclaimed in arms in 1916. The Republican Government and State then established were later overthrown by England and the nation was partitioned into two statelets. The cardinal objective of the Irish People is the restoration of the Republic thus unlawfully subverted.

The resurgent confidence of Irish men and women in their own strength and ability to achieve the full freedom of their country and the right of its citizens to live in peace, prosperity and happiness has enabled Sinn Féin to contest all 12 seats in this Election and give an opportunity to our people in the Six Counties to vote for Ireland, separate and free.Sinn Féin candidates are pledged to sit only in a republican Parliament for all Ireland. Apart altogether from the futility of the procedure, sending representatives to an alien legislature is in effect attempting to give it semblance of authority to legislate for and govern the people of North-East Ulster. Sinn Féin candidates seek the votes of the electorate and the support of the Irish people as the representatives of the Republican Movement now on the onward march towards achievement of the National ideal -- the enthronement of the Sovereign Irish Republic.

The winning of seats in these elections will not be regarded by Sinn Féin as an end in itself, nor will the results, whatever they be, effect in any way the determination of Republicans to forge ahead towards their objective. Neither will the number of votes recorded for the Republican candidates be looked upon as something in the nature of a plebiscite affecting in any way the right of Ireland to full and complete freedom. That right is inalienable and non-judicable and must never be put in issue through referendum of a section of population nor of the people of the country at large. Through the medium of the election machinery, Sinn Féin aims at providing an opportunity for the electorate, in all constituencies, and for the people of the country to renew their allegiance to Ireland, and by their support of the Republican candidates demonstrate to England and to the world the right of an ancient and historic nation to its complete and absolute freedom and independence.

Sinn Féin has been charged with disruptionist tactics. The aim of Sinn Féin today as always is to secure unity of thought, purpose and deed in the achievement of separate nationhood. Bigotry, persecution and sectarianism have no place in the Sinn Féin programme. Republican policy has ever been to secure civil and religious freedom for the Irish Nation and the individual citizens.Ireland and all its resources belongs to the Irish people. Sinn Féin will, with the consent of the Irish people, organise and develop the resources of the nation for the benefit of its citizens irrespective of class or creed. The continued occupation of Ireland by England makes such development impossible, since England has succeeded in making effective in Ireland the Imperial dictum of "Divide and Conquer" thereby impoverishing not only the Irish people but the material resources of the country as well.

Sinn Féin appeals to all Irishmen to forget all past dissension's and to demonstrate by their support of the Sinn Féin candidates their opposition to English occupation and their determination to achieve National Independence.

Published by Sinn Féin Northern Election Committee, Divis Street, Belfast and printed by the Cromac Printery, Belfast.

The big news of that 1955 election was Sinn Fein’s two seats and its 23.6% of the vote. Sinn Fein’s two successful candidates in Mid-Ulster and Fermanagh & South Tyrone had been imprisoned for their part in the raid on Omagh. Philip Clarke and Thomas Mitchell were the successful Sinn Fein candidates for Fermanagh & South Tyrone and Mid Ulster respectively. However as they were serving prison sentences they were deemed ineligible to serve in the House of Commons. In that same year - 1955 - a child was born in Dublin on November 28th : he was one of a family of seven (three girls and four boys) and his name was Pat Cannon. He and his family lived in Edenmore, on the northside of Dublin city and he became a fitter/welder by trade. He joined the IRA whilst still a teenager and soon became a trusted member of that organisation.

On Saturday , 17th July 1976 , Pat Cannon , 5 months shy of his 21st birthday, and his comrade , Peter McElchar from Donegal ,set out in a car in which they were transporting an explosive device. They crossed the border from Donegal into Tyrone and were approaching the town of Castlederg at about 2.15pm when the device exploded prematurely. Peter McElchar was killed instantly. Patrick Cannon was gravely injured and was taken to Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh. He was being transferred to hospital in Belfast when he died.

The Annual Pat Cannon Commemoration will be held on Saturday 27th July (2013) - those attending are asked to assemble at 1pm at the gates of the old cemetery in Balgriffin , Dublin. All genuine Republicans welcome!

AUGUST 2013 : A BUSY MONTH FOR REPUBLICANS.

Republicans will be a wee bit busier than usual in August this year , as the Movement expands and reorganises.

At the time of writing , the calendar of events for August 2013 includes the following six events , with possibly a few more to be added over the next week or two : on Sunday 4th August , the annual Roger Casement Commemoration will be held at Murlough Bay , in County Antrim - those attending are asked to assemble in the area of the second carpark at 2pm.

Two events will be held on the following Sunday (11th August) : IRA Volunteers Willie Gaughran and Richard Goss will be remembered in Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Dundalk , County Louth , the assembly point being across from the Lisdoo Inn pub at 2.30pm and , in Dublin on that same day, the CABHAIR organisation will hold a 650-ticket fundraiser in a hotel on the Dublin/Kildare border. On Sunday 18th , those who recognise that Derry (or any other Irish city) should not be described as a 'UK City of Culture' (or 'UK City of...' anything else, for that matter!) will assemble in Guildhall Square in Derry at 3pm to once again challenge the pro-establishment propaganda that Derry is a 'UK city'.

The 100th Anniversary of the 1913 Lockout will be marked in Wynn's Hotel in Lower Abbey Street in Dublin on Tuesday 27th August at 7pm , when a seminar with guest speakers will be held and , finally (so far, anyway !) the Annual Hunger Strike Commemoration will be held , as usual , in Bundoran in County Donegal on Saturday 31st August : those attending are asked to assemble at the East End. Hopefully , most of our Irish readers will be able to make it to one or more of the above-mentioned events and show their support for the objectives of the Republican Movement.

PROTESTERS PERPLEX PAT !

This was the scene outside a Dublin pub last Wednesday night (17th July 2013) as republicans and others queued up to buy Pat Rabbitte a drink....

Although his place of 'work' , Leinster House, was open until at least 9pm or later that night (those who didn't bunk off were debating , and then due to vote on, a 'Private Member's Bill' on the reform of the State Gardaí) , Pat Rabbitte and at least two of his political buddies left 'work' early (about 7.30pm) and went to a pub to play with/update their phones or to have a drink , depending on how you view the video!

Poor Pat , who has more than played his part in finishing-off this financially and morally lame duck of a State (he, too, has 'done the State some service...' [or 'Done the State. Some service'.] !) frantically attempted to use his mobile phone to download an app to make himself invisible but, when that didn't work, he just sat there , trying to use his phone to find out why it was he couldn't download such an app as the protesters got louder and louder. This wasn't Pat's first encounter with reality whilst out and about enjoying himself (see this short video, in which Pat hasn't got his phone but is obviously just as easily distracted by his food) but sure isn't that what you tend to do when you have the misfortune to meet the likes of him on your travels ?

Pat's political colleague in Clondalkin , Robert Dowds , has never been approached in that manner in a pub or restaurant (as far as we know , anyway : if you know differently, please notify us on 'asifigiveadamn@gmail.com....!) but, had he been, he might have been able to handle it better because of his past training. Whilst busy (!) as a Labour Party Councillor for the Clondalkin area , Robert was employed in a full-time capacity as a teacher (he taught at Scoil Mochua in Clondalkin and before that he was the Principal of St. John's National [sic] School in the area ). He was elected to Leinster House in the February 2011 State 'General Election' and , as a result, had to vacate his Council seat , which the Labour Party filled by co-opting a local Labour Party activist - also a school teacher. That much is public knowledge but less well known is the fact that Robert pocketed over €36,000 as a 'farewell gesture' from the Council (which gets its money from the taxpayer) meaning that he can well afford to eat out in restaurants and/or go for drinkies in posh Dublin pubs.

So , if his pal , Pat, needs a bodyguard , Robbie has the money for the high life (as, indeed, does Pat) plus the former has some experience of dealing with 'unruly' members of the public ! (DISCLAIMER : the pic on the left is as unconnected with this article as the Labour Party is with socialism....)

Incidentally , 'Pat the App' tried to play the confrontation down by light-heartedly suggesting that the protesters 'missed a bigger target' - the EU/ECB/IMF 'troika' were in that same pub at the time - and Pat's friends in RTE just about mentioned the incident in their news bulletin. Hopefully , Rabbitte and his type will experience many more protests like this , whether they are 'on duty' or 'off duty' , or 'off duty' whilst supposed to be 'on duty' !

CASH COW DYING A LOUD DEATH.

David Norris - 'Between 'T' and 'C' insert 'F'.....

I almost feel sorry for the man (...well, to be honest, I've felt like that in relation to him for years now!) but me thinks he doth protest too much! (See 'Blistering Attack' video , here.)

And , from his point of view, I suppose , understandably so : he stands to be out of pocket by a salary of €1,400 a week , not including expenses , if that useless institution is closed down and , as he himself now no doubt realises , if he had to work for a living he'd be doing well to take home half that amount. And it must be impossible to maintain an accent like that on anything less than a grand a week. Anyway - I presume it was because the poor man was all in a tizzy when he accused Enda Kenny of trying "...to corrupt the Senate.." that he omitted the word 'further' between the first and second words quoted in that snippet , the rest of which can be read here. If you continue to be sloppy like that , David , you never will get a proper job if/when the political creche you're in now ever does close its doors for good , and that decision will, apparently, be taken on Friday 4th October 2013 when, in part due to the level of disgust expressed by the people of this State towards that useless self-serving institution, a vote will be held on whether to abolish it or not : campaign and vote 'YES', and watch as the 'tizzy' spreads amongst the spongers that inhabit that talking shop and , in doing so, put its 'parent company' , Leinster House, on notice that it , too, is not beyond the wrath of the people.

A PRO-BRITISH IRISH ('REPUBLICAN') 'LORD MAYOR' WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE VICAR OF BRAY AND WHO HOPES TO GREET BRITISH ROYAL AND ORGANISE BRITISH ROYAL LEGION 'REMEMBRANCE DAY' CEREMONY....

The pic on the left shows the 'uniform' that the new PSF 'Lord Major' of Belfast wants to wear. Same is modelled by a Máirtín Ó Muilleoir look-a-like, as Máirtín was busy elsewhere (laying down a red carpet for himself...) .

'(Provisional) Sinn Fein's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said he intended keeping a copy of the 1916 Proclamation of an Irish Republic alongside signed photographs of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the late Queen Mother in the Lord Mayor's parlour during his year in office. He added that he would "very seriously consider" any invitation to meet a member of the royal family as Lord Mayor...he said he was already in discussion with the Royal British Legion to create a Remembrance Day event he could attend....'

During the same interview , this press baron apparently got a wee bit stroppy when asked what he felt about his new 'title' : "The correct title is Lord Mayor and you should treat people as you would wish to be treated. There are people in this city who revere these titles and why would we poke them in the eye with a stick?" he asked , and continued on to state that , after his election to that High Office (!) , he went to Mass with his mother (to offer advice to his God, no doubt...) and that he was "...amazed.." that there wasn't more people in attendance. Had they known you were going to grace them with your presence, Your Worship, I'm sure it would have been standing-room only. Anyway ; if you have the stomach for it , you can read the rest of that dribble here. I have better things to be doing with my time , like taking one of my corgis for a walk and then reading a few more verses from the 'Vicar of Bray' -

When William, our Deliverer came,

To heal the Nations Grievance,

I turn'd the Cat in Pan again,

And swore to him Allegiance:

Old Principles I did revoke,

Set Conscience at a distance,

Passive obedience is a Joke,

A Jest is non resistance.

WELCOME TO 'ORANGEVILLE 2013' - SAME AS 'ORANGEVILLE' IN ANY OTHER CENTURY.

"(The Irish) need put out of their homes...."

'12th Of July' riots are a common occurrence in the six occupied counties in the North-East of Ireland and are organised as part-and-parcel of the Orange Order's 'triumphalist parades' through areas in which they have no support and are not wanted or welcomed.

It should by now be obvious to all that the 'OO' need even bigger EU grants if it is to successfully promote its aim of ".... tolerance and mutual respect.." to its own supporters , as some of those rioters look like they haven't got a pound between them. More money will no doubt solve that 'problem' (if , that is, it filters down to the ground-level thugs from their leadership) and , it seems, the more they riot the better the case their 'Grand Masters' can make. Condemn their supporters for rioting they may , but they know they need them as leverage , especially in regards to their finances. And as long as that scenario is allowed to continue , more of this can be expected.

A 'ROYAL' BABY POST. ALL THE BEST AT THIS TIME TO YOU AND YOUR MOTHER, BUT....

IN HONOUR OF AN OCCASION THAT DOESN'T OCCUR TOO OFTEN......

.....WHEN , THAT IS , 'ONE' CAN USE THE WORDS 'ROYALTY' AND 'LABOUR' IN THE ONE SENTENCE.

As a mother (of three children) , I hope the child in question is born healthy and that s/he and his/her mother 'come out the other side' , so to speak, with no complications. Through no fault of the child in question , s/he will be born into a life of criminal privilege and will automatically want for nothing for the rest of his/her life , by virture of the fact that his/her 'clan' have used any and all methods at their command to ensure the continuation of their luxurious lifestyle , regardless of the price - physical , moral and financial - suffered by others, and this child will no doubt continue that sad cycle , as s/he will come to see such behaviour as 'normal'.

As stated , I hope mother and child are healthy after the birth but , after same is confirmed (which, hopefully , will be the case) I , for one, will not give that particular 'clan' a second thought until such time as one or other of them are instructed to 'sign off' on the Declaration of Withdrawal in connection with their administrations political and military occupation of six Irish counties. And that , hopefully, will happen before this child gets much older and/or before s/he becomes embroiled in one of the many 'trouble spots' which his/her family and their supporters have bequeathed to this troubled world.

See you all on Wednesday evening for our usual post.

Thanks for reading , Sharon.

JACK AND JILL AND 10,000 REASONS TO CALL IN THE BRITISH ARMY.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

I told the meeting that I went to see Paddy Hogan at their bidding and he refused to talk terms with me - that in his view his fight was with me and that that was a bit of good luck for them. Hogan would make no terms with me, but he would make peace with them , and on their own terms at that. I told the meeting that I saw that in his mind and we facing each other across a table as clearly as I saw the plates on the dresser. All they need do to cast aside fear of the bailiff and fear of the jail was pay one year's rent and there would not be another word about the arrears, provided they did one thing more - make it known to the newspapers that they were doing this against my advice.

Into the silence that fell then , James Doran stammered hurriedly - " That's the word , Janey (Eugene) Doherty sent me. Get rid of Peadar O'Donnell and you're rid of your trouble." There was no message I should prefer before that one at that moment. Eugene Doherty was one of the government TD's for County Donegal and he lived in the village of Dungloe. This message would have more authority that his word behind it. Here was proof , if I needed it, that my feet were on the ground.

I explained that in order to demonstrate that they were all in this together, they should use the same wording in all their letters and towards that end I had brought a bundle of cards which would be distributed among them and they could take the wording from them. This would show they were still holding together and not just stampeding out a gap. I turned to Black James Duirnin and said - " This is the backdoor we always said we would use if we had to. Advise them to use it." But before Black James could get to his feet , as he rarely spoke without getting to his feet, Jimmy Getins spoke : And is this the best we can do ? I say, Peadar, is this the best we can do...?" (MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916 -

- REVISIONISM EXPOSED.....

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

In conclusion, the modern-day success of the revisionists owes much to the failure of the 26-County State to even come close to achieving the aspirations contained in the Proclamation of 1916. Dublin (ie Leinster House) accepted partition and is unwilling to confront the situation today in the Six Counties in any realistic manner. Subservience to the British through the Hillsborough Agreement has led to Dublin keeping quiet on such issues as the Birmingham Six , the shoot-to-kill policy, and collusion between crown forces and loyalist death-squads etc.

The 1916 Proclamation is a fascinating document and it's programme for real revolution in Ireland was echoed in the Democratic Programme of the First Dáil in 1919 but was abandoned by the Free State government in 1922 , as its aspirations were far too radical for the reactionary combination of Catholic Church and the conservative element which was the Free State establishment.

Their primary objective was to crush republicans , to make their peace with Britain and, most importantly, secure their new position of power within the confines of what the British had conceded, no more than that. ('1169...' Comment : .....and that remains the objective of the Leinster House institution and , by default, the objective of all those who voluntarily share that physical space with them.) (MORE LATER).

MUSIC TO MY EARS......

Introducing kids to the 'gentle' side of warfare.

A gang of thugs is still a gang of thugs even when they are dressed in clean , crisp ,shiny and colourful uniforms and brandishing musical instruments instead of weapons of war. That was the point we made when we wrote this piece in September last year : "When a charity goes bad : this well-known children’s charity has , I believe (and I hope) made a major faux pas by getting itself involved with the British Army in order to ‘boost its profile’ and fill its coffers. It has teamed-up with a musical gang of British Army cheerleaders and has decided to do so in a plush venue with the type of people who will only use the charity to boost their own profile. Whatever financial gain Mr Irwin and his colleagues derive from this charade deserves to be costly in terms of the moral standing amongst decent people which the charity will lose...." (...more here.) Others , too, objected and , although the gang of 'musicians' turned-up and done their bit for Brit Army PR and the on-going 'normalisation' policy , the 'Foundation' attempted to cover its tracks and removed from its website , as best it could, all mention of its connection to the British Army in relation to the 'fund-raiser gig' but was unable to delete mention of the 'gig' by third parties , thus placing it in the position of having to defend itself.

And once again , the 'Jack and Jill Foundation' has made the news in connection with dodgy dealings : "Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Jonathan Irwin said that the organisation has been forced to return €132,000 in donations within the last 15 months....." (from here) , this time in relation to an apparent credit card fraud in which those committing the fraud deposited ('donated') tens of thousands of Euros to the 'Foundation' in order to test cloned credit cards. When the 'J and J F' realised what was happening they returned the dodgy 'donations' and, in doing so, ran up a bank 'account administration' bill of about €10,000 !

This blog can only suggest that the 'Foundation' hold a fund-raiser to clear this debt and we ask that their colleagues in the above-mentioned shiny red uniforms put on a (jolly good) show , on a 'FOC-U'* basis , naturally, with same to be held on July 12th. Admission tickets should be priced at 30 pieces of silver per person even if the person trying to gain admission is wearing a shiny red uniform and carrying a musical instrument and especially so if that person is a card-carrying member of the 'Foundation'. After all , it wouldn't be fair to differentiate between that sort.... (*'FOC-U' : 'Free Of Charge-Unhindered')

ONE SLIPS THROUGH THE CUCKOO'S NEST......

Win or lose , it's a song worth signing!

This RTE video will probably be gone or edited by the time you click on it , but at the time I posted this it showed the Limerick hurling team in their dressing room after they won a game against a team from another county (!) and they celebrated by , amongst other things, singing a song that hasn't been heard on RTE television since it was taken over by the State 'Establishment' (which was shortly after it first came on air) . The song in question , 'Seán South of Garryowen' , tells the story of IRA man Seán Sabhat , a man whom RTE would consider to be a 'dissident/gang boss' , to be mentioned only in relation to drugs and thuggery.

The next match that that Limerick team take part in will probably be in relation to some or other prison league.....!

ANOTHER ASSURED PENSION-POT FOR THE BANKERS AND THE POLITICIANS.....

Rabbitte : 'Doing Better' to ensure his pension at the price of his own political future.

'Every household in the country (sic) will be hit with a new Public Service Broadcasting Charge to replace the television licence fee next year. Nobody will be able to refuse to pay the charge because it will apply regardless of whether you have a television, computer or any other device that can pick up public information....' (From here.)

In other words , every household in this State will shortly be charged for a service which is broadcast be a media outlet regardless of whether they use that service or not. A defence of not owning a device which is capable of receiving that which is broadcast by that media outlet (ie a mobile phone , TV , radio or computer) will now have no bearing on whether or not you 'owe' the fee - apparently , if you qualify to be registered on the State 'Register of Electors' (regardless of whether you vote or not!) you will be judged to owe the money , which - for now - is set at about €160 a year. This move by the money-hungry politicians has a silver lining , in that it presents me and like-minded individuals with another opportunity to make a stand. As stated here previously , I haven't paid their double-bin tax , or their household charge or their property tax and I won't be paying their water tax or this new 'Broadcasting Tax' thus, hopefully, forcing them to take me to court to seek an order that 'monies owed' can be stopped out of my wages. I'll 'suit up' with a legal rep as best I can , financially but , win or lose , they won't be voluntarily getting any more taxes from me other than that which they already stop at source. I can't afford to keep them and their banker colleagues in the style to which they are accustomed and even if I could I wouldn't do it. See you in court.

WEXFORD COME IN FIRST. AND LAST.....

....BUT (RSF) DUBLIN PLAYED A STORMER !

** Blushing ** here at the fact that, in our pre-raffle post , I stated - "According to what I've been told (by those that like to think they know better!) there isn't a lot of sporting activity planned for this coming Sunday (14th July)....." when, in actual fact, one of the biggest sporting 'gigs' for us Dubs was taking place on that Sunday : we were playing a match against Meath , in a Dublin venue , and (apparently!) we won. Yippee!

The hotel was absolutely jammers , mostly, it seemed, with Meath supporters but, as the match proceeded, they weren't as loud as the Dubs as all present (except, that is, for those of us who couldn't care less!) seemed to sense that us Dubs were gonna take the cup. Or the trophy. Or the pat on the back , or whatever it was that was on offer.....;-) !

Anyway - now for the important stuff! Wexford put on a 'good show' in the hotel , with Pat Kavanagh winning the first prize of €200 on ticket number 469 and Liam Roberts collecting the last prize (€20) with ticket number 448. A Mr. Gavin Dennan (who wouldn't tell us where he was from , except to say that he wasn't a Dub or from Wexford!) claimed the second prize (€100) with ticket 150 and loud cheers from all those who , presumably, weren't from Dublin or Wexford either! Anto B. , one of our regulars, sold two of the winning tickets - 3rd prize (€40) , won by the lovely Ella with ticket 567 and 5th prize (€20) won by the 'shy-girl' Nicole with ticket 563. Another 'mystery man' , David Stapleton , collected prize number four (€20) with ticket 179 , our Andy sold Niall O'C ticket number 682 which won him €20 and our last prize of the day , prize number seven (ticket 024), was sold by Anto , our bus driver, to the lovely Michelle , who bought her mentor a drink out of her winnings of €20.

And finally : in an effort to deflect attention from my Dubs-Meath faux pas , I want to draw your attention to this 'loser' , who made an even bigger raffle-related blunder than I did.... (....and yes, of course I know it didn't actually happen [unlike my boo-boo!] but gimme a break - I'm clutching at straws here....!)

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

GOOD CAUSE , SOLID PROTEST , BUT AN HISTORICALLY CONFUSED SPOKESPERSON.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

I did not feel like cheering when I left Hogan's office. I must wire Phil McCauley this news, before others got time to shout it at him. I spent a lot of time over the telegram - I wanted to signal the committee to hold on, but I was not in a very inspired mood and I could not find any message that did not seem to reflect, in some way, on their instructions to me. In the end I simply stated that Hogan refused to discuss any terms and asked for a full meeting of the Dáil (sic) three nights hence.

If word of a meeting would not hold them, nothing I could do would. I think it likely I went in somewhere for coffee - I am one of the freak Irishmen who deny themselves the comfort of the public house. 'Deny' is not the word , it is just a world off my beat. It did not help at all that I had no idea what whispers influenced the committee , and so I made what preparations I could for my meeting in Donegal. I got a number of forms run off at the 'An Phoblacht' office , sorted out my ideas and fumbled around for words that would light them up, writing and re-writing. There is always a best way to say a thing.

This time I drove to Donegal , alone, as I think well while driving a car. I holed up in a gravel pit on a side road to time my arrival at Getins' house half an hour after the time fixed on for the meeting. Getins as host of the evening bade me welcome : "It's too bad , Peadar, " he greeted, "I say it's too bad." It was a habit of his to repeat himself when he was worried and add "I say" for emphasis. I pushed my way through the thronged kitchen to the hearth and picked up a creepy on my toe , settling it where I could stand on it , the better to be seen in that gathering of tall men. This was a wider meeting than the Dáil (sic) and I noticed faces that should not be there.....(MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916 -

- REVISIONISM EXPOSED.....

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

The intention of enforcing military conscription on Ireland similarly aroused a national sentiment which culminated in Sinn Féin's sweeping victory in the 1918 elections (and the later increased mandate in the local government elections of 1920) and the demise of the 'Irish Parliamentary Party' which was seen increasingly as an irrelevant failure.

Sinn Féin's exhortation to Irish people that they had the right and the ability to take control of their own destiny promoted a degree of self-confidence - the one quality which a colonised nation lacks. The 1916 Rising came about as a direct result of the self-confidence engendered by the cultural revival movement : the reclaming of an Irish identity , whether through language, sport, music , writings or poetry.

The Citizen Army , which played such a vital role during Easter Week, had its roots in the titanic struggle of labour against capital during the Lock-Out of 1913 when so many people starved but held out for so long against the monetary might of the employers and their leader, William Martin Murphy. The Rising itself provided the spark which led eventually to guerrilla war and Irish military commanders travelling to London to negotiate with the British cabinet. 'Talking to terrorists' was a policy which the British government continued in the 1970's although we hear many pious pronouncements now about how this well-tried policy is an inconceivable option. (MORE LATER).

10TH JULY 1917 : 96 YEARS AGO ON THIS DATE.....

One of the election leaflets distributed in the Clare area in 1917.

.....DE VALERA WON A BY-ELECTION IN CLARE FOR THE THEN SINN FÉIN ORGANISATION.

Two candidates contested for the seat
(which became vacant after it's 'owner' , Major Willie Redmond, died at the battle for Messines Ridge in Belgium on 7th June 1917 - he and many others had convinced themselves and had been convinced by others that by fighting side-by-side with British forces they would win 'Home Rule' for Ireland) - de Valera for Sinn Féin and Patrick Lynch for the 'Irish Party'. Lynch , a British Crown Prosecutor by 'trade', attempted to capitalise on the threat of conscription to the British Army by claiming that only an 'Irish Party' victory could prevent same , stating that the (then recent) 1916 Rising would be to blame if conscription by Westminster was enacted! He also attempted to scare voters away from de Valera by insisting that the (on-going) Irish republican policy of abstention from British and British-established 'parliaments' would mean that, by default, conscription would be made law as absent elected Sinn Féin representatives would not be on hand to vote it down (as if they could carry enough political weight and/or numbers to do that!).

Pro-de Valera election leaflet , 1917.

One of those working with de Valera on his election team went on record to declare - "We cannot touch Ennis and Lynch is a strong candidate. He has defended one half of the murderers in Clare and is related to the other half...." and, indeed, he was 'well got' in the area , with a strong track record : he was 51 years of age when he contested that election in 1917 , whereas de Valera was only 35 , an 'inexperienced young fella' , up against 'an older and wiser man' who worked in the legal profession as a barrister and British Crown Prosecutor , and who had a track record in (constitutional) politics , taking the Parnell side when that party split. Lynch's own people considered him a 'sure thing' to the extent that his party leadership didn't bother to assist in his campaign, preferring instead to comfort their party leader, John Redmond, on the death of his brother, Willie, whose death in Belgium on 7th June (1917) caused the by-election (in March 1918, John Redmond joined his brother , Willie, in that much-weakened 'Home Rule' cloud in the sky) . But the 'sure thing' , Patrick Lynch , lost the election by 2,975 votes - de Valera polled 5,010 compared to 2,035 for his opponent , thus 'encouraging' Lynch to 'look into his heart' whereupon he fairly quickly discovered that he was really an Irish republican (!) and he joined the then Sinn Féin organisation! He voiced opposition to the Treaty of Surrender in 1922 yet was appointed a 'King's Inns Bencher' in 1925 and then , in 1934, was elected to the Free State 'Seanad Éireann' as a Fianna Fáil member , where he remained until 1936, when he was appointed FS 'Attorney General' , a post he retained until 1940. He died , aged 81, seven years after he left that Office, no doubt comforted by the fact that he shared the same kind of Irish 'republicanism' as his one-time opponent, de Valera - a 'brand' practiced to this day by those in Leinster House who are following in the political footsteps of those two men.

GOOD CAUSE , SOLID PROTEST , BUT AN HISTORICALLY CONFUSED SPOKESPERSON.
Countess Markievicz , with revolver.

A protest was held in Dublin on Thursday last , 4th July 2013 , in opposition to an auction of family homes (and businesses) which had been repossessed by (taxpayer-owned!) banks and, as a result, the auction was cancelled. Protestors gained entry to the venue (the Shelbourne Hotel) and also maintained a presence on the street outside the hotel. Those attempting to profit, on this particular occasion, from the politically-inspired economic collapse in this State , 'Allsop Space' (which apparently has two shareholders - Dublin based 'SPIH' [100 'B' shares] and 'Allsop', a London-based auctioneering company [100 'A' shares]) decided to cancel/postpone the auction and one of the protestors , a Mr. Tom O' Reilly , is on record for (rightly) stating that ".....people feel it’s very wrong to have English agents selling Irish properties on behalf of English owned banks. It irks a lot of people that this is going on...." whilst another protestor , a Mr. Tom D'arcy, made reference in comments he made to a television reporter in relation to how "Countess Markievicz gave up his life to enable us to eradicate suppression , taxation, eviction..." .

Perhaps Mr. D'arcy was just momentarily unbalanced by the tv camera in front of him and the microphone which was being held to his face, but Countess Markievicv was a female who died in 1927 as a member of Fianna Fáil , the 'Builders and Bankers Party'. And , speaking of which , Mr. D'arcy himself has an 'interesting' background , and has divided opinion in relation to his position re "taxation" and other such social issues - see here , here , here and here.

Mr. D'arcy was , apparently, a multi-millionaire property developer who, after his business gambles failed, ended up with over €17 million in unpaid bills , a sizeable portion of which is owed to the taxpayer in this State , raising the question that if his business plans had gone as he no doubt intended
(ie to 'progress' from a multi-millionaire to a billionaire ?) would he still have protested outside the hotel that day ? My enemy's enemy etc....

A DERRY 'GATHERING' TO HIGHLIGHT A POLITICAL PR EXERCISE.

An Irish city will never be regarded by Irish republicans as a 'UK City of Culture'

On Sunday 18th of August next , a 'gathering' will take place in Derry at the Guildhall at 3pm to protest the fact that an Irish city is being promoted as a 'UK City of Culture', a decision which, when announced , was warmly welcomed by, amongst others, those who professed to be engaged in a battle against British interference in Irish affairs. Those who are genuinely against British interference in Irish affairs will be outside the Guildhall on Sunday 18th August 2013 , not inside it. All genuine republicans welcome !

DAY 24 OF HUNGER-STRIKE AGAINST THE PROPERTY TAX.

....the words of Enda Kenny. When he was in 'opposition' to the then Fianna Fáil/Green Party State administration, of course....

This man has been on hunger-strike since Monday 17th June 2013 in protest against the property tax and , although he has had some coverage in certain newspapers and on one or two radio stations , both television stations in this State have ignored the man and his protest, least they offend their colleagues in Leinster House. But now that the 'Boss of Bosses' in that institution , Enda Kenny, has signalled that he is prepared to acknowledge that the man does exist , his supporters in the management of those TV stations should now be more 'relaxed' about highlighting his case.

However , Mr. Kenny appears to have set a 'precondition' to his offered meeting with Tony Rochford - that of offering advice to Tony that he should seek to 'defer' payment of the property tax, as if the poor man has been fighting for that option all along. The only way that deferral should be considered an option is by the politicians offering to 'defer' the whole notion of a property tax until such time as State taxes, income tax , so-called 'Value Added Tax' and the various financial 'levies' that those same politicians have imposed on the citizens of this State are either withdrawn , reduced or used correctly to pay for the services that , we have been told, the income gathered by the new property tax is to be spent on. And hopefully Tony Rochford will put that point across to Enda Kenny , should the offered meeting ever take place. And, by the way, I haven't paid it and I won't be paying it. If anyone wants to tax me for living in my own home, then they'll have to prove their case in court.

'PRESSURE' RE THREATENED WATER TAX.

Eamonn Gilmore , before he got fat , comfortable and thirsty.

And so it begins in earnest , as expected : even as people are still being threatened about paying the imposed and unjust property tax , they are being put 'on notice' that they will shortly be required to pay another double-tax - for water , a resource which is supposed to be already paid for by increased tax rates. 'Domestic rates' were abolished in this State in 1977 after being 'under discussion' by various political parties since 1973 , by which year the Fianna Fáil party had held Office for almost sixteen consecutive years. Hoping to capitalise on a State electorate which was weary of FF , Fine Gael and Labour issued a joint manifesto in which they promised to abolish domestic rates , a proposal which the then FF State administration dismissed as "nonsense". However , in the closing days of that 1973 election campaign, FF announced that it, too , would abolish rates if re-elected ! But it was 'too little , too late' for FF and Fine Gael and Labour won the mercs and perks - but broke their "abolish rates" promise. Seeking re-election in 1977 , that coalition resurrected its "abolish rates" promise , and FF followed suit. And won. Domestic rates were abolished by FF in the 1978 State budget but fees , charges and tax rates were then increased to make up the shortfall in revenue and, since then, those 'fillgap' charges etc have increased.

The same people that have paid , and are now still paying, those increased charges etc now find themselves being 'billed' a second time for those same services ie bins, property and water and have been informed that in the case of the latter soon-to-be issued 'bill' (ie water) the supply of same to their house will be curtailed , and at low pressure to boot, if they don't pay that particular double tax. And , no doubt , should FF promise to abolish that double tax (and/or other such unjust taxes) they would win an election. And the muppets that vote for them will still be surprised when they break that promise or implement it whilst increasing taxes to 'make up the shortfall' !

SLIGO TO TRAVEL TO DROGHEDA......

......AS PAT'S MOVE TO UCD (?!)

Or something like that. According to what I've been told (by those that like to think they know better!) there isn't a lot of sporting activity planned for this coming Sunday (14th July) but one 'game' that is going ahead is the monthly raffle : all 650 tickets were distributed over the last month , the raffle crew are , as always , rarin' to go , the (usual) venue has the (usual!) red carpet dusted down and cleaned for our arrival and the 'Top Table' has been 'Reserved'. And that's only in the mini-bus that takes us out there....!

And if I'm not whisked off to New York again (!) sure I might write a few words here on Monday or Tuesday about how we got on. But I am available to carry bags if you're going to NYC.... ;-)

Thanks for reading, Sharon.
