CABHAIR , STREET BOWLERS AND CHELSEA FANS !

CABHAIR RAFFLE ADDS TO THE MAYHEM OF A SPORTS-MAD SUNDAY AFTERNOON !

The Dubs and Chelsea , Spurs , Man United , Sunderland , Stoke City , Newcastle United , Man City and the local street bowlers (apologies if I've left out any teams etc but ye are all the same to me !) were out in force on Sunday last as were their many supporters , which allowed standing space only in the hotel where we were trying to run a 650-ticket raffle : I have no idea whether the Dubs beat the street bowlers or even if that's who they were playing against (!) or if New City beat Strokeland (!!) but I do know that CABHAIR were the real winners on the day - plus , of course, those eight lucky punters that pocketed a nice few bob in between all the madness !

A chap called Anthony , from the Kildare area , was there with a bunch of his mates, all of whom were crazy Chelsea fans and, being Chelsea fans , were well used to taking a gamble (ha! ha! Tony - take that !) so they sent Tony over to us with a tenner and we sold him five tickets. And two of those tickets were winners - Chelsea Jimmy won the 1st prize , €200 , on ticket 146 whilst his buddy , 'Hammer' , won the 5th prize , €20, on ticket 550 : that was our drinks for the day sorted (!) and swear to God it was like they had won the mug. Or cup, or whatever it is that those soccer teams win , such was the cheering and slagging that went on !

A quiet , unassuming and gentle young lady from Ballyfermot , in Dublin - and her to be dressed in her 'Dub Colours' and blue and white hair (!) , Marion Sullivan , bought her ticket from us about half-an-hour before the raffle began , as did her pal , Robbie Molloy , also from Ballyfermot - Marion won 2nd prize , €100, on ticket 658 and Robbie collected €20 ,4th prize, ticket 322. A Spurs fan , Luke, from Meath, had ticket 422 which won him 3rd prize, €40, and his fellow-Spurs fan, Gerry, from Roscommon, collected the 6th prize of €20 with ticket 501. County Westmeath weren't playing that day but Clare , from Mullingar , got herself 'on the pitch' by collecting 7th prize , €20, with ticket 353 and our last winner was Dáithí , from Wexford , who won 8th prize with ticket 434.

It was a loud ,colourful and hectic few hours for us , the sports fans and the hotel staff , but it was the craic for us all and a good time was had by the lot of us and, more importantly , the CABHAIR organisation was the overall 'Winner'. And we now have a few weeks to get ready for the next one!

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

TRICKLE IT DOWN FOR THE TROOPS.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

The stationmaster at Fintown risked a 'phone call to me in Dublin to tell me I must do something about this at once, else "this other man who has come over to us " would think himself let down. I promised him that we would make an example of "the man from without" , but it turned out that by the time I was free to go to Donegal the matter had already been taken care of.

The Letterkenny bailiff , a boastful , innocent man who made too much noise , and felt safe once he had got a seizure out of the way into the law-abiding big-farmer countryside , had some big-mouthed government supporters in Letterkenny who encouraged him in his noise. Therein lay our salvation , for Pat Kelly of Bonagee , an old friend of mine from the days of my work in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union , hearing the talk, went on the war path and had no difficulty in finding out who had bought the seized cattle.

Pat was as radical a Fenian as the countryside ever grew and, even though I don't know along what avenues he spread the word, John McMonagle and Jim Harkin came together with him to sneak the seized cattle from their new owner's farm and, driving all night, they landed them with Pat Harkin of Drumkeen in the grey of the morning. The police hunt for the cattle broke on such a scale that it scared both the farmer who bought them and the bailiff who seized them : this was war. (MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916 -

- REVISIONISM EXPOSED.....

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

Revisionism arrived at a timely moment to legitimise Dublin's inadequacies as the internal contradictions * of the Northern state became too much and British troops arrived amidst the debris to supposedly 'stabilise' the situation **.

This revisionist school prefers to see 1916 in terms of an anti-democratic blood sacrifice which achieved nothing, pre-empted the achievement of Home Rule by 'constitutional' means and was itself the wellspring of today's 'murderous campaign of the Provisionals'. Such people as Conor Cruise O'Brien , Garret Fitzgerald , Ruth Dudley Edwards , John A Murphy and Ronan Fanning are peddling what is fast becoming the accepted version of history in the 26 Counties.

Peter Beresford Ellis , in an article in the previous edition of 'IRIS' , made the point that these historians could be better described as "unionist fellow-travellers" : these respected academics masquerade as providing a 'balanced' view of Irish History , and claim that they can step back from the 'unhelpful' nationalistic emotions which surrounded the struggle for independence. But theirs is as subjective an analysis of history as any socialist's or nationalist's , and is tailored to support the establishment and the status quo ***.(* - "internal contradictions" , such as, perhaps, the Provisional Sinn Féin outfit administering British misrule in six Irish counties whilst at the same time professing their objective to be one of ending British misrule in those six counties! / ** re 'to stabilise' - that, ironically, is the same type of language that Mr Spain's colleagues in Provisional Sinn Féin are now using, to 'explain' the British military and political presence in six of our counties! / *** 'supporting the establishment and the status quo' must have had a different meaning then than it has now, as that is exactly what the PSF organisation is doing now!) (MORE LATER).

AND SPEAKING OF 'REVISIONISM'....
Attempting to re-invent the past , Provo style.

Picture the scene : It's 1988 and you are in Belfast , one amongst tens of thousands of mourners attending the funeral of three PIRA members who were killed in Gibraltar : you are aware that the British Army , the RUC and their (and other) various 'Special Units' are watching proceedings even though, for the most part, they are not visible.

Suddenly a loud explosion sends clay flying through the air and debris bounces off people, knocking them over, injuring them - panic ensues , as nobody is yet sure what is happening. Then you hear gunshots and more explosions, as people dive for cover , with those trying to flee tripping over them. The elderly can't dive for cover or run and small children are equally as helpless. Three mourners are killed and about fifty injured , but the perpetrator is caught : Michael Stone , a loyalist paramilitary , is caught running from the scene by mourners and taken away by his comrades in the RUC.

At the funeral of one of those killed by Stone , the procession is again attacked , this time by two armed men ,in plain clothes, in a car. Obviously fearing the worst, some of the mourners , at great personal risk, surround the car and block it from travelling anywhere, and remove the two armed men from inside it. Quickly identified as being members of the British occupation force , the two men are disarmed, subdued and taken from the scene by the PIRA. They are then executed.

Now , however, in an effort to 'excuse' and/or 'apologise' for this exercise in self-defence , and to integrate themselves further into the 'establishment' from which they draw their financial and moral succor , those that represented the PIRA at that time have declared that those two armed undercover British operatives were "courageous" and "decent" ! By implication, the apologist Jim McVeigh has practically stated that those resisting oppression are as guilty as the oppressor , the British government, and have thus insinuated that that whole period of resistance and self-defence was somehow 'wrong'. A poacher turned gamekeeper , stopping off along the road to Damascus to 'revise' the path he himself has left behind. Won't be long now until McVeigh and his Provisional Sinn Féin colleagues blame nature on the 'Troubles' in this country, having placed Ireland too near to England !

10TH APRIL 1923 - NO COMPROMISE ACCEPTABLE.

- IRA General Liam Lynch , 29, shot dead in Tipperary by Free State forces.

On the morning of 10th April , 1923, Free State Army General Prout , Divisional Commander of the State Army in Waterford, ordered his British-armed troops to scour the South-West Tipperary and West-Waterford area for an IRA unit which he knew to be in the vicinity. That IRA unit was led by General Liam Lynch , who was a particular target for the then new anti-republican Leinster House institution , as he had laid down a marker for them : "We have declared for an Irish Republic and we will not live under any other law....the war will go on until the independence of our country is recognised by our enemies, foreign and domestic."

In a gunfight that took place in the Knockmealdown Mountains in South Tipperary, Liam Lynch sustained a bullet wound which incapacitated him and, with the Free Staters moving in on their position, he ordered his unit to proceed without him , as they were carrying important intelligence documents : as armed Free State troops cautiously approached the dying man , he identified himself to them by name , telling them that he was the Chief-of-Staff of the Irish Republican Army , and asked that they get him a priest and a doctor, as he knew he was dying. The Staters assembled a makeshift 'stretcher' out of their rifles and carried the dying rebel to Nugents pub in a town called Newcastle from where he was taken to the hospital in Clonmel , where he died shortly after 8pm that night , the 10th April, 1923 , 90 years ago today. You can read the finer details on the life and death of this brave Irishman here.

10TH APRIL 1998 : A LINGERING COMPROMISE.

RSF 'VOTE NO!' leaflet from 1998.

The Stormont Treaty (aka the 'Good Friday Agreement') was signed on this date (10th April) 15 years ago after almost two years of talking (or 'negotiations' , as those involved would have it) . For Irish republicans to engage genuinely with Westminster , a British military and political withdrawal would have to be on the table and negotiations proper could then be entered into in relation to the date of same ; the document that was signed 15 years ago today was a bad , weak compromise on behalf of nationalists (not republicans , who had no hand , act or part in this event , save to campaign against it) but it suited the British and their colleagues in Leinster House as it took the pressure off them and allowed them to try and present a 'peace achieved' scenario re what they term 'the Troubles'.

As with the 'Treaty of Surrender' , Sunningdale and Hillsborough , the Stormont Treaty is not what Liam Lynch gave his life for nor is it acceptable to republicans today.

A FAMILY HOUSE DOESN'T EARN AN INCOME , SO WHAT IS THERE TO PAY TAX ON ?

Property tax ? No Way.....

The denizens of 'The Big House' in Kildare Street in Dublin are in agreement with their employers in regards to squeezing extra money out of the unemployed and those who still have a job , in order that their own privileges be maintained and , despite the skin-deep 'objections' of the IMF's man in this corrupt State , it was agreed between them that a tax should be levied on the dwellings where those who pay tax on their earnings , their spend and their savings (if any) live , and 'bills' for same have already been dispatched.

Those of us who are genuinely opposed to this unjust tax will give a lively 'welcome' to the 'Big House' people and their friends this coming Saturday , 13th April 2013 , as they gather for croissants and wine in Dublin Castle : thousands of us will assemble on that day at 12.30pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square and will march to their 'Castle'/Ivory Tower to deliver our message-'Property Tax ? Can't Pay , Won't Pay , Don't Pay , No Way !'

Hope you'll join us !

THATCHER'S BEQUEST.

The genuine 'Iron Ladies' - made so by Margaret Thatcher.

IT.

I curse the wretched evil

That makes me feel this way

That forces me to think of it

With every passing day.

It makes me hate and wait and wait

To hear it's dying breath

For that I'm sure it must endure

A slow and painful death.

It's loathed in Buenos Aires

Likewise in Crossmaglen

Despised in every closed down pit

From Kent to Bilsten Glen

It deprived men of their livelihood

It stripped them of their pride

It took their coal and gave them dole

Their dignity denied.

It tore apart communities

It devastated lives

It made enemies of neighbours

And left husbands without wives

It disregarded consequence

It killed both young and old

It privatised our heat and light

And left us dark and cold.

It undermined democracy

Sold council homes for votes

It hid the truth on Hillsborough

As history denotes

It robbed the poor to pay the rich

With unjust, unfair taxation

The price of which is being paid

By another generation.

It murdered Argentine conscripts

In the South Atlantic seas

Outside it's own exclusion zone

It let them drown or freeze

It delegated evil

From it's Whitehall ivory tower

It kept Mandela in prison

And Pinochet in power.

It wreaked it's trail of terror

'cross Ulsters rolling hills

It ran the Loyalist death squads

It sanctioned shoot to kill

It took three 'out' without a shout

In cold blood upon the Rock

And let ten Irish martyrs die

Of hunger in the Blocks.

But when it's day of judgement comes

As all things come to pass

We'll shed no tears nor mourn it's loss

Among the working class

Instead we'll meet on every street

In every town and city

And tramp it down into the ground

Without remorse or pity.

RAKING IT IN FROM HAVING SURRENDERED YOUR PRINCIPLES.

"This new 'republicanism' lark pays much better than our old jobs, eh, lads...."

Back in 1998 , when the Provos had let it be fully known that they and their 'republican objectives' were for sale if the price was right , Adams and McGuinness had come to realise from other 'poachers turned gamekeepers' that if the enemy offers only to bribe those at the 'Top Table' of the organisation attempting to sell itself , the project will fail. The biggest share of the financial gain will , obviously, be hoovered-up by the leadership of the prostitute party in question but, in order to give the 'new build' a steady foundation, funds must also be offered to the grassroots of the party being purchased.

And so it came to pass : one of the many 'community-based organisations' that was established at that time in order to occupy the thoughts, amongst other things, of some of the then recently demobbed activists was an organisation which named itself 'Coiste Na N-Iarchimi' , a beast which quickly grew to contain about 25 connected groups which required some 90 full-time staff to service. However , the Brits - having been down this road many times in other countries they 'kept the peace' in, before buying it - were experienced enough to bring in others to help share the financial cost , but those 'outside financial backers' (including an EU body , the 'Special European Union Programmes Body') , did not fully appreciate the manner in which such business is done here and actually expected - ha! ha! - accountability (and maybe ever concrete results, God bless their innocence!) as the cost of keeping this 'trickle-down' fund breached the £1 million (Sterling) mark. The whole set-up was examined and it was discovered that the company in question had been struck off the companies register as it had not filed accounts and returns etc (after being told twice that it would have to file the missing paperwork) , prompting one of its Directors to claim that they did not have to file accounts like that to the Companies Office (!) and after which another Director , a prominent Provisional Sinn Féin member, resigned her seat as a Director.

Cynics amongst the readership of this blog would be of the opinion that the financial 'powers-that-be' in relation to the funding of this organisation have reached the conclusion that those in receipt of this 'trickle-down' money are not now likely to return to their previous militant incarnation and therefore the days of paying them to be elsewhere are over or , at the very least, numbered. More information on this issue can be had here , and all ye cynics and non-cynics can make up your own minds. Just don't expect to be paid for doing so.....

CABHAIR TO TAKE ON CHELSEA , SPURS , MAN UNITED.....

....SUNDERLAND , STOKE CITY , NEWCASTLE UNITED AND MAN CITY !

Or so the Events Manager in the 'Hotel Raffle' informed us , anyway ! That kind Gentleman has put us poor minions from the raffle committee 'on notice' that, on this coming Sunday (14th April 2013) , all the above-mentioned soccer games will be played , plus some GAA fixtures , horse racing and a local game of road bowling and that all of them (except the latter, apparently) will be televised. Normally , we could gladly get through our Sundays without knowing that information (!) but the Manager is only too aware that a guaranteed full house for him and his staff means a busier day than usual for those of us that run the monthly raffle for the Movement and, as that raffle is due to be held on that same busy sports day, we , too, are going to be run off our feet.

He actually rang looking for more tickets to sell to his customers , as the forty we had left him to sell are all sold already , but we had to disappoint him : there are no spare tickets for this raffle and we are not expecting any returns before the actual raffle or on the day of it. Which means that myself and the other girls , on top of running a 650-ticket raffle, will have to apologise repeatedly on the 14th to literally dozens of soccer and GAA supporters why it is that not only did their team lose (!) but they have no chance at all in winning on the raffle because they haven't got a ticket for it nor will they be able to get one. Should we get out of there in one piece , we'll list the winners on this blog and give a quick report on the event as soon as we can!

BEEN THERE , DONE THAT - DOING IT AGAIN !

Central Park , surrounded by the city of New York!

I have been there before , in great company , to meet great company - and before this year makes it to the half way mark , I'll be there again ! The same gang of us that wrought havoc (!) on the shops ,bars and residents of that gentle city in 2009 and 2011 will shortly be doing so again! We have everything arranged (we believe...) , from the 'baby'-sitters to the milk cancelled and all the way back 'round again to the house-sitters : holidays booked from the jobs , credit unions squeezed to within an inch of our lives and the partners and kids already assured that , yes, of course we'll miss them....!

In February last , our friends and colleagues in New York that provided apartments , transport and storage space (for our mini-mountain of shopping bags!) for the five of us in 2011 asked if we were thinking of visiting again (and we were , but we didn't want to appear too 'greedy' in asking if we could have use of the same apartments etc!) and they suggested that , if we were, we could help ourselves to the same lodgings as before , and transport around the city and to New Jersey etc would be available to us , no fee, no strings attached ,come and go as we please etc, as before - so naturally we jumped at the opportunity and in the last few days it all came together for us and the final arrangements were made !

As I mentioned before , the five of us are very closely matched , socially and politically , and, whilst I'd be lying if I said that 5th Avenue and the Diamond District etc doesn't interest us , it's not where we spend most of our time : we explore , and try and get a feel of the real New York, the gritty side and, although it's only a short-term 'solution' , we help out , financially , when we encounter such scenes , which is often, unfortunately. Anyway - I'll keep you posted about when it is that I'll not be posting : (MORE LATER !).

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

THE 'IRON LADY' CAN NOW RUST IN PEACE.

MARGARET THATCHER : AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HER DEATH.

Thatcher - "A bounder , a liar , a deceiver, a cheat....."

Not forgetting that even Margaret Thatcher had parents and , therefore, was loved at one time or another by at least those two people and will be missed by at least two others (her children) , the air seems cleaner for her passing and almost all seems to be now right with the world , despite her best efforts to fully foul the air and the planet.

Her arrogance and her misjudged sense of self-worth was plain for all to see in her dealings in her own country with the trade union movement and in this country with, amongst her other failings, the 1981 Hunger-Strikers ; she despised both organisations and the representatives of same, the former because she realised that 'ordinary Joe Soaps' had to be kept down (ie 'in their place') if her vision of a fully capitalist society was to come to fruition and the latter because such principled fighters for justice were not only alien to her political belief system but courageous people like Bobby Sands and his comrades also threatened her preferred society.

That Margaret Thatcher , the politician , was a complete hypocrite was perhaps best illustrated in November 1989 when , during an interview she gave to BBC Radio 4's 'World At One' programme , in connection with the 'opening up' of East Germany, she brazenly declared : "You cannot stifle or surpress a people's desire for liberty" , which, of course, is exactly what she was attempting to do in Ireland , amongst other countries. Three years earlier , during the Westland Helicopter Affair (which led to the resignations of then British Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine and Trade Secretary Leon Brittan) British Labour Party MP Thomas Dalyell Loch described Thatcher as "....a sustained , brazen deceiver : I say she is a bounder , a liar , a deceiver , a cheat and a crook." Well qualified , then , to sit in Westminster.

As stated , her two children will miss her but , with a bit of practice, their aim will get better before she goes six feet down.

3RD APRIL 1925 : THE UNIFORM CHANGES BUT THE ATTITUDE REMAINS.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

I woke PH O'Donnell out of his bed, and he told me that I was the greatest fool of a man that ever walked the roads - he said I would hang and it would be the price of me and he hoped he would live to see it. The silent men around me who packed the hallway and overflowed into the large kitchen listened in bewilderment. PH noticed the water dripping from their clothes and ordered them into the shop , but it was only with a nod from me that they went.

He gave every man a complete set of underwear and a pair of corduroy trousers and he got his household to cook a meal and he himself helped. Ever since the campaign against land annuities became talked of, PH spoke his own views : ' it was all a piece of rascality, the man at the back of it was touched.' PH and I lived in that sort of noisy, warm relationship - it was he now who passed on the word to Hughie O' Donnell , and I had invoked his help.

The raid on Croveigh was a great piece of theatre : the bailiff and his escort were cheered and jeered from empty byre to empty byre across empty fields , women giving the civic guard escort a bad time. I expect Colmcille got credit for the whisper that saved the glen! It is likely that the sheriff's office got suspicious of our local bailiff who sent back decrees marked 'No Goods' , for out of the blue a bailiff from Letterkenny side came into the townlands on a day before a fair and he got clear away with most of the stock of one of our fighting families....(MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916 -

- REVISIONISM EXPOSED.....

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

De Valera concentrated on removing the last vestiges of overt British rule in the 26 Counties , for instance running down the office of Governor General , provoking the 'Economic War' by refusing to pay any more land annuities and abolishing the Oath of Allegiance. On the substantive question of tackling the very real British presence in the northeastern corner of Ireland, de Valera copped out.

His republicanism was one with a very small 'r' , and he proved just as adept as his Cumann na nGaedheal predecessors at repressing republicans. He accepted the de facto partition of the country * while making pious claims of sovereignty over all of Ireland in his 1937 Constitution **.

The revisionist school owes much to the latent sense of guilt felt by the Irish establishment in relation to the Six Counties ; the 'I'm all right Jack' approach taken by the leadership in the South to the pogroms , gerrymandering and paramilitary oppression of the likes of the B-Specials suffered by nationalists ruled by the Unionist ascendency from Stormont left the ground ripe for the revisionist school in the 1970's.....

(* - At the time he wrote that piece [ie 1991] , the author and his party, Provisional Sinn Féin, were five years in to having recognised partition by stating , in 1986, their intention to operate within the political parameters of the 26-County partitioned State / ** - a State Constitution which the author and his party abide by!)(MORE LATER).

MY FRIEND , THE ENEMY....

In 1922 , former Irish republicans requested assistance from the British Army in an action intended to secure a military and political position for themselves in the 'pecking order' of a then new British-supported Statelet. At the time, those that called-in ex-'enemy' equipment did so, they claimed , 'to save lives in the long run'.

And now , 91 years after that fact, former republicans with that same Free State mentality have done it again : they requested that "....the (British Army) Ministry of Defence send helicopters.." but, this time, it was to 'do battle' against the weather. For humanitarian reasons , of course, but doing so begs at least two questions : why, up to now, did Provisional Sinn Féin consider it taboo in the past to request such assistance from those they would then have regarded as 'the enemy' (and, indeed, would have defended and excused attacks on people like that) and however did we manage in the past in such bad weather before it was deemed 'acceptable' to request aid from the British Army ?

By their actions in this instance , Provisional Sinn Féin have set a precedent with which they can integrate themselves further into the 'establishment' (and not only in the Six Counties, but in Westminster, Dublin and Washington, too) and have greatly assisted the British in their 'Normalisation' process. But then, as history has shown, it is only 'normal' behaviour for 'poachers turned gamekeepers' to behave like that, in their rush to exorcise their past.

LABOURING UNDER AN ILLUSION.

The State Labour Party's Death Warrant - irrevocable.

They are worried , and rightly so : they cheered , slagged and slow-hand-clapped from the sidelines both in Leinster House and outside of that IMF HQ as the Greens were being wiped out , assured by comments from ex-Sticks Rabbitte and Gilmore that the same fate would never be encountered by their State Labour Party , as it was 'a bottom-up policy-led fully democratic party that listened to and was guided by its membership and voters...' etc etc.

Well , if they are listening to their membership and voters then the leadership of the farce that is the State Labour Party will know that the game is up - there is nothing they can do now to reverse the trend. That leadership should now overtly (instead of covertly) go all out to feather its own nest and place 'its people' on even more State Boards and quangos in the hope that , in the next few years or so, those so placed will be able to return the favour by at least spinning some 'good news' stories about that Party , thereby helping to ensure their return to Leinster House. Or, at least , to some county councils around the State, for starters.

Those who still doubt that the 'colour' of that Party is red will have their doubts dismissed at the next election , local or 'General' , by the splattering of blood in the count centres. And that's a pretty picture : red on a Green background ! And , while we are on the subject of the doomed State Labour Party , what do Eamonn Gilmore and Tom Cruise have in common ? They are both facing 'Oblivion'.

3RD APRIL 1925 : THE UNIFORM CHANGES BUT THE ATTITUDE REMAINS.

From this.....A member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP), a British creation in Ireland.

...to this -

A member of the State 'Garda Síochána' , a Free State creation in Ireland.

A history of the former (DMP) will show that between 1836 and 1925 , approximately 13,000 men passed through its ranks , some of whom were 'awarded' the 'King's Police Medal' whilst others transferred to the DMP from the 'London Metropolitan Police'. Other like-minded colleagues joined the gang , having developed a taste for it in the RIC. This group changed uniforms again on this day (3rd April) in 1925 , and again changed its name - to that of the 'Garda Síochána' , but kept its by-now infamous attitude : to defend the State - whether British or the Westminster-permitted 'Free State' in Ireland - by the same methods.

And these are the methods that Irish republicans and other 'Lefties' , as the State see us , have experienced from that State militia , whatever it may call itself. Since their inception , the State 'Police Force' have attempted to present themselves as a 'neutral' body , dedicated to 'keeping peace' in society , regardless of the circumstances : the truth , as those of us who have 'dared' to challenge this unjust system , is (as per those four links) much different - they see their position as one in which to preserve the status quo , whether same is dictated to them from Westminster or Leinster House. They may not know it yet but one day (hopefully!) soon, they will have to change again , but this time it will be more than just a change of uniform.

RSF DUBLIN EASTER 2013 COMMEMORATIONS - BRIEF REPORT AND PICS.

Cait Trainor , RSF Ard Chomhairle, delivering the main oration at the GPO , Dublin, Easter Monday 2013 (1st April).

The Deansgrange Commemoration on Easter Sunday (31st March 2013) went as planned , but I won't have a report or pics re same for a few days - I do know that a decent crowd attended and that those at it received plenty of 'attention' from the Special Branch , but proceedings were not interrupted due to same.

Three of the regulars : Matt (left) , Dan on the stage and Paddy in the background, Easter Monday , Dublin, 2013.

The main Dublin commemoration was held today (Easter Monday , 1st April 2013) at the GPO in O'Connell Street - a very chilly O'Connell Street , but a dry one - at 2pm, after the parade had made its way to that venue from the Garden of Remembrance , where at least eight 'Special Branch' men and twelve of their uniformed colleagues done their best to upset proceedings, but failed to do so. An RSF Colour Party from Dublin led the way , followed by uniformed reps from Cumann na mBán and Na Fianna Éireann , and an Irish Republican band from the Occupied Six Counties was also in the Parade. Approximately 200 people stood with us in O'Connell Street at the GPO for the duration of the commemoration , with dozens more coming and going during the eighty-minute time frame. All 400 'leaflet packs' were distributed , as were sixty 'leaflet scrolls' , each of which contained three republican printed items.

Making its way from the GOR to the GPO......

....and arriving there.

Commemoration Chairperson Andy Connolly , opening proceedings.

A full report on the Deansgrange and the GPO Easter Commemorations will be published in the April 2013 edition of 'Saoirse' but , until then, the following few pics will have to do you !

"Unbroken Continuity" banner at the GPO ,Dublin , 1-4-13.

As viewed from the back.

Cait Trainor addressing the crowd.

Na Fianna Éireann member at the GPO , Dublin , Easter Monday , 1-4-13.

Dipping of the Flags , GPO , Dublin , Easter Monday , 1st April 2013.

....and two short videos here -

Apart from the usual (and expected) State harassment - more so at the Garden of Remembrance than at the GPO, where they were content to just view and record the proceedings - this Commemoration went as intended , and all concerned are to be congratulated for their work.

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

LAST AND LEAST : LOADED , BENT AND BIASED....

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

Croveigh people will tell you that Colmcille slept a night in their glen and that the sheltering shadow of his hand has been over it since, and will be forever. No man on-the-run was ever caught in their glen , not even wounded strangers, with the great hunt on their heels, in the year of the French ; day raid, dawn raid , night raid - always some ear caught a sound in time.

If ever you took shelter there, on the run, you might think if Colmcille left the glen any gift it was sharpened hearing , beyond human range. Even animals had it - dogs barked at less , cattle got to their feet in the byres for less , ducks, hens, geese , even the grass, couldn't fidget at night but they heard it. It would be unlikely that trouble would sneak in on us, but it could come with a rush and in great strength and overwhelm us.

And then suddenly our day brightened. Hughie Donal Anthony O' Donnell , a merchant of the village of Dungloe and a government supporter - an upright and honourable man who was above all else a good neighbour - got a whisper of the day and the hour for the raid on Croveigh and he passed it on. It came to him from PH O' Donnell , from Doochary, a man of great contradictions. He was a Hibernian , a dedicated supporter of John Redmond. Once, in the Tan days, I brought a whole IRA active service unit into his home, late at night, after a long march. We were wet , tired and hungry.....(MORE LATER).

THE BETRAYAL OF 1916.....

.....REVISIONISM EXPOSED.

From 'IRIS' magazine, Easter 1991.

By Martin Spain.

Most Irish people still regard the 1916 Rising as a great moment in Irish history. It is seen as a heroic act of defiance staged to reawaken the desire for Irish freedom , a symbolic military blow for freedom which achieved its ends with the rise of Sinn Féin and the IRA and the subsequent Tan War. The Irish people gave Sinn Féin an overwhelming victory in the general election of 1918.
The Tan War saw Britain at last defeated in Ireland , albeit in a limited manner.

The subsequent tragedy of the Civil War and the acceptance of partition by an emergent and reactionary Free State government left a sizeable section of nationalist opinion betrayed , trapped without a voice in the sectarian Six-County statelet. The Free State had accepted partition and by doing so had abandoned Six-County nationalists to their fate.

When de Valera's Fianna Fáil acceded to power in 1932 there was a feeling among many republicans who had openly campaigned for Fianna Fáil during the election campaign, that at last something would be done about partition and achieving national self-determination once and for all. Instead the new Fianna Fáil government merely paid lip-service to Republicanism.(MORE LATER).

EASTER 2013 : BEWARE OF FALSE LILIES.

State-approved Easter Lilies!

"Easter Lilies....will be sold by Licensed Sinn Féin Sellers (sic). Always ask for a permit before you donate."

The above leaflet/poster was issued by Provisional Sinn Féin in Offaly , following instruction from their Head Office in Dublin to word it as is. Similar instructions have been issued for decades now , at this time of year, to all areas in which PSF have a presence and, as with their people in Offaly, all areas complied with the instruction.

The irony of the situation is either lost on or glossed-over with that type of 'republican' , although I suspect it's the former : those involved with the Provisional political party are either unaware of what the Easter Lily represents or simply don't care about that aspect if, by ignoring same, they reckon they can boost whatever chance they have of forging a political career for themselves.

To seek 'permission' and a written permit from those that played a major part in the deaths of the men and women you seek to 'honour' is, at best, politically perverse and, at worst, politically immature , and is an issue I have commented on before. To ensure you don't get fooled into contributing to a false 'Cause' and wearing a Free State-approved Easter Lily , best to deal only with genuine republicans and to attend genuine Easter commemorations - a list of same can be seen here.

SHOCK! HORROR! €17,000 LEFT UNTOUCHED.....

A 'uniform' approach : selling your 'loyalty' to the highest political bidder.

Bent (and/or incompetent) politicians and incompetent (and/or bent) trade union leaderships have both 'contributed' to hundreds of thousands of workers in this State - myself included - suffering wage reductions in recent years , whilst the cost of living increases. Like most of those other workers, I fought tooth and nail to hold on to that which I already had and myself and my work colleagues went through the necessary motions and eventually secured a hearing in a Court setting , only to be badly let down by our trade union reps at a crucial stage: the wage reductions stood (two of them, within an 18-month time frame) and we had no option , with that employer, other than to 'suck it up and get over it', as management and our trade union reps put it.

Had we attempted to 'blackmail/intimidate' our employer into reversing the wage cuts or to prevent them from implementing such cuts in the first place I have no doubt that they would have used same to have us dismissed from the job and, had we challenged them re same, I don't doubt that we would have lost. For example , had we said to our employer that '...there is a risk of your workers being got at financially ....you cannot have a situation where your employees are put into a place where they might not want to be in terms of their ability to pay their lawful debts....such a scenario wouldn't be healthy for all concerned...' , we would expect the 'authorities' to be called in to investigate our 'threats'.

Interesting, then, to see what happens when it's not only the 'authorities' themselves that make such 'threats' but actually act upon them. But one thing is certain - had we, the 'ordinary joe soap' workers done it, we would not be allowed to 'investigate' it ourselves.....

"I PROMISE , IF ELECTED...."

A load of....

Labour Party member Ruairi Quinn , the current 'State Minister for Education and Skills', is in good company : he has surrounded himself with other political spoofers. His boss , Pat Rabbitte, is one such spoofer and, between them (Fine Gael and Labour, that is) , they have reneged on political promises made not to introduce a property tax , not to pay "one more red cent" to Anglo Irish Bank , not to cut child benefit payments (cut twice since that particular promise was given) , to protect special welfare payments to the disabled (since cut) , to specifically keep the Roscommon Hospital Accident and Emergency service open (since closed) ....and there are many more such examples , but you get the picture : don't vote for any of them on the strength of what they promise you , either on the doorstep or in leaflets/posters/advertisements etc.

And it's not only those that are at the 'Top Table' inside the tent that are pissing all over you - those that are also inside that tent (albeit not at the 'Top Table') cannot be trusted either -

(They are 'in the tent' but no cuts have been reversed...)

- the only true recourse that we have is to wish a plague on all their houses : next time you get the opportunity , use your vote wisely - perhaps after promising the candidate on your doorstep that , yes, of course you'll vote for them.....

.....AND SPEAKING OF 'MISDIRECTION' -

- the 'Save Moore Street Dublin' group are an organisation that we on this blog and , indeed, Irish republicans overall, have a lot of time for : we have met and been introduced to some of their members at various events over the years and know them to be genuine activists , committed to their objective , which is the preservation of "....buildings (which) form part of the most important battlefield site in modern Irish history......" (more here).

With that in mind, we want to draw attention to a similarly named group which purports to have the same objective in mind and which appears to have the interests of the area at heart , until, that is, you 'open the bonnet' and examine what it is that makes it 'tick' , as the genuine activists have done. They discovered enough faults to issue this warning - "It has come to the our attention that the developers committee who seek to demolish the National Monument are still trying to gain support for the demolition. Their latest effort is very novel. They have set up a 'booth' with promo video and a petition for the public to sign in the ILAC centre at the Parnell Street entrance. They have used our name on the literature and are misleading people totally. We would urge all of our supporters to avoid this stunt or if you feel the need go and tell them how you feel about their plans for demolition. Be advised, they are past masters of spin and will try anything to convince you otherwise. A number of supporters including some of the relatives have already been barred from their facebook page after asking very legitimate questions about this groups plans."

We have a link for that false group but we won't be posting it here , as we don't want to give them too much publicity nor do we want to possibly add to any confusion in relation to this issue. Suffice to say that the above-mentioned 'Facebook' link will not lead to you being 'misdirected' should you wish to get in contact with genuine activists in relation to this issue.

LAST.....AND LEAST.

Loaded , bent and biased - TV3 aims to please the 'Establishment' with 'docudramas' such as 'In The Name Of The Republic'.

"Between 1917 and 1921 , Irish republicans took on the might of the British Empire. And won." That comment was delivered on Monday night last , 25th March 2013, as the opening credits were rolling at the start of the final episode of TV3's 'In The Name Of The Republic', which concentrated its ire on the IRA in the Cork area. And aptly so - as far as those connected with that programme are concerned , the fight was for a 26-County Free State and , once that was 'won' (at least in so far as there is no British military or political presence overtly exercising power in this failed entity) then any armed actions by republicans after that 'win' were unwarranted and 'terrorist' in nature.

20 minutes into the programme and there was only an 'oh-by-the-way...' -type reference to the damage inflicted on the people and the area by the British Army and their colleagues in the RIC , and even this was practically excused by the voiceover, which informed listeners that "....the IRA murder campaign was having a demoralising effect on the RIC.." and references were made about "...IRA killing sprees..".

The programme made reference to , in my opinion , one unsound source of material in particular , on more than a few occasions and, when it did refer (begrudgingly) to IRA operatives that it did not consider to be taking part in a "murder campaign" it did so by asking "....what those dignified old IRA men would have had to say about the shooting of spies and informers...?" but , pointedly, the programme makers never did get around to asking them that question !

Had there been a third episode , it no doubt would have highlighted the cultural contribution made to Irish society by the British Army and their comrades , the gentle Black and Tans.....

DUBLIN RSF EASTER COMMEMORATIONS 2013.

DUBLIN EASTER COMMEMORATIONS 2013.

I have met them at close of day

Coming with vivid faces

From counter or desk among grey

Eighteenth-century houses.

I have passed with a nod of the head

Or polite meaningless words,

Or have lingered awhile and said

Polite meaningless words,

And thought before I had done

Of a mocking tale or a gibe

To please a companion

Around the fire at the club,

Being certain that they and I

But lived where motley is worn:

All changed, changed utterly:

A terrible beauty is born.....

Cait Trainor , RSF Ard Chomhairle member, will deliver the main oration at the GPO on Easter Monday : all genuine republicans welcome!

Thanks for reading - hope to see you at the GPO on Easter Monday,

Sharon.

20TH MARCH 1943 : 21 IRA PRISONERS ESCAPE FROM DERRY JAIL.

'THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DAY.....' By Peadar O'Donnell ; first published in January 1963.

On December 17th , 1927, 'An Phoblacht' carried a report on Croveigh : " Events that will test the nation's conscience - evictions are threatened in the Tirconail Gaeltacht. Croveigh, a pocket of reclaimed land within a ring of raw mountain, is to be attacked. In the Tan days this glen was the resting place for groups of wanted men. The same white-washed cottages. In one home there are father, mother and two daughters, the boys are in Scotland. The spinning wheel in the corner, that was her grandmother's. The names cut on the flags in front of the door- the old woman tells of the days when they were cut. This is the sort of home the Land Commission proposes to uproot. Have we come to this then ?"

We had so. Things had come to a pretty desperate pass. There was no longer a safe byre or a safe field in Croveigh - there were decrees out against every holding. I was scared that something more elaborate than the bailiff's ordinary , hit-or-miss raid on a particular farm would be attempted , that this one would be in force through being guided by a decision on a higher level that the sheriff's office. And we were pathetically weak. I spent a good deal of time with Black James and we checked over what the total loss of cattle would amount to, should the worst befall us.

We were afraid to ask anybody sell such of his stock as were in a forward state for the market lest people would think we were looking back over our shoulders now that the crisis of the struggle had been reached. I was scared.(MORE LATER).

THE WRONG ARM OF THE LAW......

Roisin McConnell claims she was abused, called "a murdering bitch" , "Satan" and "the Devil". She claims gardai told her that her child would be taken away, that her husband was having an affair, that she would "do seven years in jail" and that she was "going to get stabbed". A named garda told her that when this happened, he would spit on her grave, she says.

By Sandra Mara.
From 'Magill' Annual 2002.

The McConnells are currently taking an action against the State but no amount of compensation can repair the damage to this family, and as recently as last weekend Roisin McConnell was again hospitalised, as a result of her experiences.

With over 20 similar actions being taken by the McBreartys , Michael Peoples , the Gallagher family , Hugh Diver and others, the implications for the State , financial and otherwise, in what has been described in the Dail (sic) as "the most sinister, ruthless and malicious case of garda corruption in the history of the State" , are enormous.

The financial costs alone are estimated as being likely to run into millions. In a country (sic) now riddled with scandals , this has arguably become the greatest scandal of them all.

20TH MARCH 1943 : 21 IRA PRISONERS ESCAPE FROM DERRY JAIL.

11 of the 21 IRA escapees were 'arrested' in Donegal by Free State forces within hours of the escape.

Early on Saturday morning , 21st March 1943, as the Logue family of Harding Street, Derry, were about to sit down for their breakfast, they noticed a part of their small garden rising up and being pushed back - their garden wall formed part of the perimeter of a neighbouring premises , Derry Jail : a figure pulled himself up from the hole in the ground and began assisting others that were trying to scramble to their feet. Within minutes there were 21 men assembled in the small garden, all of whom rushed into the Logue house and let themselves out through the front door. They ran to near-by Abercorn Place and jumped into a waiting lorry , a furniture removal van, which was driven by an on-the-run IRA man , Jimmy Steele, who had recently liberated himself from Crumlin Road Prison!

Among the escapees were well-known IRA activists Patrick Donnelly, Ned Maguire ,Hugh McAteer , Liam Graham and Brendan O'Boyle who, incidentally, was the last man to be helped from the tunnel. Jimmy Drumm was earmarked as the last man and was in the tunnel, yards behind Brendan O'Boyle, when he heard a warning being shouted that the British Army had discoved the exit and were picking-up the men as they emerged - so he turned back, only to discover later that it was a false alarm.

The tunnel had been started in November 1942 , in Liam Graham's cell and, out of the 200 or so IRA prisoners in the jail, 22 had been picked by the prisoners themselves as it was felt that that group could more readily 'rally the troops' on the outside as each of them had a high profile in the Movement and were respected by all concerned (except, obviously, by the Brits and the Staters!) . An estimated five tons of clay was removed over a five month period and most of it was scattered in the prison grounds, although repeated attempts were made to dispose of some of it via the toilets , which blocked the pipes. A plumbing company was called in on a regular basis over that five month period but, whether they knew what was happening or not, they said nothing and the warders and their bosses knew nothing of the excavation that was then on-going - indeed, during the last few weeks of the dig, the IRA prisoners had held a 'mini-fleadh cheoil' to cover the noise and the constant comings-and-goings from cell to cell and from cell to prison yard.

Jimmy Steele and Harry White had each organised to have about 12 men on stand-by on each side of Britain's border in Ireland to assist with the dispersal of the escapees , the majority of whom were taken to Donegal but, within a day , some of their number had been captured by Free State forces and interned in the Curragh. Others were also captured in that county, in a place called Glentown , and they were then held in a FS barracks in Letterkenny.

That successful escape effort not only helped to refocus world attention on to the then(-as-now) on-going struggle for national liberation in Ireland , but proved to be a massive morale boost for the Republican Movement - it helped to insure that the flame stayed lit, and brought in new recruits who, in turn, passed the mantle to those who hold the same values today.

TOMÁS MacCURTAIN , LORD MAYOR OF CORK : MURDERED BY BRITAIN ON 20TH MARCH 1920.

Tomás MacCurtain , shot dead in his house in Cork by British police on 20th March , 1920.

"Tomás MacCurtain was shot dead at his home at Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool between 12.10 a.m. and 1.15 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 1920. It was the morning of his thirty-sixth birthday. The fatal revolver shots were fired by two men with blackened faces who had rushed upstairs and called him out of bed after his wife had opened the door to their knocks and threats. Companions of the murderers held her at the door while the crime was being committed. The inquest verdict found that all those engaged were members of the Royal Irish Constabulary...." (...from here , and a short video of the funeral can be seen here.)

DON'T MENTION THE WAR.....

In what has (rightly) been described as an act of "cultural censorship" , the organising committee responsible for last weekend's St Patricks Day Parade banned trade unionists from entering a float commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1913 lockout. The 'reason' given by the politically-connected 'suits' that run the parade was that the 1913 float proposal "....didn't reflect the theme of the Gathering..." , an event which seeks to encourage those who were forced from these shores for economic reasons to come back for a visit and be taxed heavily by the political class whilst here.

The banned St Patricks Day Parade representation of the 1913 lockout, on the other hand, would serve as a reminder to those watching that it was greed on an economic and political scale, which affected the working class in this State, that made a 'Gathering' possible ie had those that fled for economic reasons in recent years not been forced to flee there would be no body of financial emigrants abroad to 'entice' back. However , the irony of this 'ban-the-float' episode is not lost on Irish republicans : amongst those that supported the idea is the trade union SIPTU , which normally works hand-in-glove with Leinster House-appointed organising committees such as the one that binned the proposal.

It would be nice to think that the 'float refusal' outcome would help serve as a wake-up call for the likes of SIPTU in relation to realising just who it is they should consider as being on 'their side' but that won't happen - this is just a temporary bump in the road for both bodies, and will no doubt be quickly resolved around apéritifs at the next taxpayer-funded meeting that both sets of reps meet up at.

SEVEN MINUTES FIFTY SECONDS FOR A POSITIVE REAL ALTERNATIVE.

If you can spare just under eight minutes of your time , and then maybe another few minutes to pass the link on, it would be appreciated. This is a visually refreshing representation of the Irish republican position and it deserves as big an audience as possible. Turn your speakers on and click here.

AN IRISH SOLUTION TO AN IRISH PROBLEM !

Those that call for a boycott of this unjust tax have my full support , providing they don't 'change horses' midstream.....

A person who tells those who log on to his website that he is a pensioner from Cork is concerned about the new State-introduced (and enforced) 'Property Tax' and has organised an on-line petition against same , and asks that his readers join him in "....petitioning Fine Gael TDs and Senators (to) repeal the Household Tax Law...". The 1994 quote from Enda Kenny re property tax ("It is morally wrong, unjust and unfair to tax a person's family home") is quoted by the site owner, readers are given a link to the petition and asked to email it to their friends, family and work colleagues and to pass it on via Facebook and Twitter and a sample letter of protest is provided on the site for people to copy and send to named Leinster House members. All good stuff , and proper order - any and every avenue should be used to combat that tax and it was our intention here on this blog to do what we could in promoting that site , and others like it. But we do so now for a different reason....

...a recent post on that site advises readers in the following manner :

'TIP: If, through fear, you feel you have to pay this tax, then:-"ONLY PAY BY CHEQUE in 12 monthly installments." (Good reason!)'

So there you have it - an 'Irish solution to an Irish problem' : a concerned citizen sets up a website in opposition to an unjust tax but , when push comes to shove - when it comes to the crunch - he bottles it, and suggests that the tax be paid in what he perceives to be a manner which will make it 'awkward' for those that it is paid to! Yes, indeed - that'll 'teach them' not to mess with you, you old rebel you.....

But seriously - that behaviour is , unfortunately, representative of the prevailing attitude here at the moment amongst most people - they know they are being treated unjustly and unfairly, they complain about the situation and swear blind that they will fight back , they may even write a 'Letter to the Editor' and/or set up a website/blog with which to garner support and spread the word. But when the time comes to put up or shut up they find what they consider a 'good compromise' ('.....ok so I have to pay it but I'll do so in installments/in pennies/cents/50 cent pieces...') and thereafter try and convince themselves that they have shown 'the man' that they are not to be messed with!

In the long run, people like that do more harm than good - their actions demoralise would-be supporters to the point that those of us who do genuinely mean what we say are tarred with the same brush as those 'half-way-housers' and the fight against the issue at hand (property tax, in this instance) is lost. And , by the way - I haven't paid the bill I received for bin tax , nor did I pay the 'household charge' , I won't be paying any water tax and have absolutely no intention to pay this latest (property) tax. Roughly one-third of my wages are stopped , at source, in various taxes , when I spend money I'm taxed on it and if I manage to save some money (in the Credit Union, for instance) , I'm taxed on that , too. I won't be paying those "BY CHEQUE" or in "12 monthly installments" . I won't be paying them at all , full stop, and if/when they take me to court and/or attempt to stop same out of what remains of my wages, then I'll fight them on that as well , as best I can. And that's the way it has to be , but I'll not ask someone to do that which I am not prepared to do myself.

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

IN THE NAME OF TALLAFORNIA.....

1920's IRELAND AS IT NEVER WAS.

A tilted presentation.

I was right to be wary : TV3's 'In the name of the Republic' would have given an 'outsider' the impression that armed British soldiers and pro-British militia were in Ireland in the 1920's to protect women and children from marauding gangs of wild IRA gunmen who were using the struggle for independence as a cover to settle old scores and/or to cover up their own military mistakes by executing those whom they deemed to be 'deserving' of it. There was no in-depth study of British Army or RIC activities , with the latter presented and portrayed as Irish men defending themselves from a war of attrition forced on them by other Irish men.

The programme was unbalanced and propagandist; the best thing about it was its theme tune. The second part of it will 'examine'(/spin) IRA actions in the Cork area in the early 1920's and, whilst I'll watch it, I won't be expecting anything different to that which was shown in the first episode. Except, of course, a change of scenery. The sooner the better TV3 gets back to its roots - more 'Tallafornia' , please.....

Thanks for reading, Sharon.

IN THE NAME -OR 'DEFENCE' - OF THE REPUBLIC.

'IN THE NAME OF THE REPUBLIC.....'

....as opposed to 'IN DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC'.

In a (guarded) welcome break from the trashy 'Tallafornia'-type nonsense that it has become known for (it's nickname 'BabySky' is well earned) , TV3 is airing the first in a two-part programme dealing with one aspect of the Irish Civil War period - the executions of those that actively worked against the Irish Republic. This installment will be broadcast at 9pm on Monday 18th March 2013, under the title 'In the name of the Republic', and that, perhaps, is the first warning bell : it is, in my opinion, a 'loaded' title , in much the same manner as to have called it 'In defence of the Republic' would have annoyed the Free Staters amongst us.

Part of the 'promo' for the series refers to "...the dark side of Irish Republicanism..." with nary a mention of "the dark side" of other organisations that were involved or why it was that those trying to defend the Republic had to resort to the same "dark side" that was employed by the forces attempting to destroy them and the Republic. 'In the name of the Republic' rather than 'In the name of the Treaty' - ie why does it appear that this programme is determined to focus on the violence of those who acted in defence of the Republic and of themselves rather than the violence of the pro-British/anti-republican forces who set out to destroy them and that Republic ?

I would expect the usual anti-republican 'spin' from this two-parter and have no reason to suspect otherwise , but I'll watch it anyway , if only to listen to its theme music - that seems like it will be its only saving grace.

Thanks for reading, Sharon.
